    Small snip:

"I didn't even know he was sick," Dupre says. "He was buried in D.C., and his headstone does not have his name on it. It strictly says, 'A gay Vietnam veteran,' and the inscription on it is, 'When I was in the military they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one.' "

Sad. There are all kinds of love. Love for friends is not necessarily any less compelling than romantic love. People will sacrifice themselves for both. The military encourages friendship and interdependency in units. Soldiers frequently suffer extreme psychological trauma when they lose members of their units. They have been known to disobey orders to take care of their buddys. What's the difference?
