Democrats Plan to Filibuster to Thwart Gorsuch Nomination

Very disappointing, but not the least bit surprising. Everyone who predicted dems would say Gorsuch is extreme and way out of the mainstream, collect your winnings. If Gorsuch can't get approved, no one can. Might as well go nuclear now, so when the next opportunity arises to nominate a SCOTUS judge, the opponents won't even show up for the hearings.
WASHINGTON — Democrats signaled on Thursday that they would filibuster the nomination of Judge Neil M. Gorsuch, President Trump’s Supreme Court pick, setting up a showdown with Republicans who may be forced to change longstanding rules to seat him on the nation’s highest court.
“He will have to earn 60 votes for confirmation,” Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, said on the Senate floor Thursday morning, citing the threshold for breaking a filibuster on the selection. “My vote will be no.”

    Maybe. Maybe not.

Thing to remember is that Schumer did not come to the decision of filibuster for ideological reasons. What they (Democrats) did was go through all their calculations and concluded the Democratic Party would score more political points with a filibuster than not doing so. Pure politics.

So the GOP should be going through the same exercise. They will still need to get Gorsuch confirmed. But they need to calculate the value of nuclear versus trying to negotiate with the Democrats to approve Gorsuch without the filibuster.

Political chess game. Interesting to watch.

I often wonder what Gorsuch thinks about taking the SCOTUS seat that rightfully belongs to Garland.

Yes, Schumer needs to show that he can herd cats that the last dem leader couldn't.

Yeah, except the fact that the seat doesn't "rightfully belong to Garland".

The GOP controlled the Senate. And they had no obligation to confirm Garland. (whether he was brought up for a vote or not.)

    Really ?

Why would todays' GOP controlled Senate confirm Gorsuch then let alone grant him a hearing ?

Yes, because that's what the US needs, a one party dictatorship.

Uhhh, because they (GOP) want Gorsuch seated on the SC.

This thing is really not that complex. Are you really confused by it....?
