My relative has had several operations at infection sites under her skin that were opened up and "cleaned out" whatever that means. Then sewed-up and eventually released. Was that part of your experiences? I understand if you prefer preserving your exact medical history as private.

It's called incision and drainage - it is the surgical draining of abscesses in the epidermis and dermis. Yes, I had several abscesses drained. One episode started as impetigo and turned into abscesses all down my legs that were over an inch deep with pus/infection. I looked like a dalmatian. They drained for several weeks and I wasn't allowed to go to work until they scabbed over. Then I had an abscess on my upper thigh that had to be surgically drained a couple times and I had to do wound packing. Then I had numerous other infections they contributed to MRSA that didn't involve abscesses.

I stopped showing symptoms but passed it to my dad (who ended up with a baseball-sized abscess on his neck) and my mom (abscess on her nose). I was a regular typhoid Mary, which sucks when you're a health care worker.

I'm very glad you have recovered. I think we're in the starting phase with a long road ahead. Can I ask for a huge favor in describing what medicines and regimens helped you recover please. I would love to bounce them against what the doc's here will advise.

Knowing your story has made me see some light in the tunnel. Thank you very much!

For the impetigo-induced abscesses, I had to use a topical antibiotic (can't remember the name). I was also put on a course of doxycycline for that. I had been put on sulfamethoxazole but I ended up being highly allergic to it (that was super fun). The next time I had an abscess they just put me on Clindamycin. At some point I had a dental abscess they thought was caused by MRSA that had started to erode my jaw so I was put on Clindamycin again. Over the course of several years I was on basically every antibiotic that wasn't a sulfa drug or vancomycin because I am allergic to both. The ER also put me on antibiotics that don't actually work in MRSA infections.

I didn't have a family physician during this time, so the ER was basically slapping a band-aid on rather than looking at a long-term cure. When I finally got a family physician, he ordered a bunch of tests and then put me on the nasal spray. I think the nasal spray was Mupirocin.

It took 3 to 4 years because I never had any follow-up or whatever before I had a family physician, but the spray worked.

A friend just has mrsa, they give you a series of antibiotics, sometimes one wont work and they try another till they get the right one. They isolate you in a private room.

    Good luck jimmyz

Private rooms are not the norm?

My wife fell off a swamp buggy 15 years ago, landed on a cypress knee, shattering her knee, one year later she lost her leg due to this same bug the hospital gave her. Prayers for your loved ones!

    That sucks.

Go to the hospital if you want to get sick. Or sicker.

There wouldn't be enough beds, nonetheless private rooms, to treat every person with MRSA. As far as I know, most are treated on an outpatient basis unless there is a risk their infection could cause death. For example, if you get an MRSA infection in your cerebrospinal fluid.

I read somewhere that it is estimated that 75% of the population in many western European countries are carriers. It is not uncommon to be a carrier.
