Sedate him for the trip. Put a box in a closet (leave door open a bit) containing all of his favorite things - his bed etc and things that smell like you and leave him in there until the sedation wears off. He'll come out and if he's nervous he'll go back in, but eventually he'll be hungry and have to use the litter box. Cat's can't resist boxes.

Well, been two weeks and they are mostly back to normal. Only over the last few days did Louis start hanging out in the living room rather than hiding under the bed during the day. From day one he has come out at night to check things out. Theodore is still prancing around quite happily - he likes the space.
Thanks for the advice everyone. A lot of the tips helped and I didn't have to drug him into oblivion.
Just completed my move, I bought my cat to the new place in a wire dog cage on a bicycle trailer, she barely meowed during the ride. I left her in her new yard in the trailer for a while before taking her in the house.
When I let her outside, I obsessively followed her for a while. Now we are both settled in. Glad your move went well.
