    Navy Test-Fires Electromagnetic Railgun

    Navy Test-Fires Electromagnetic Railgun

Cool new weapon for the Navy. Over 100 mile range. Video at link.

The U.S. Navy Office of Naval Research has released new video of a test of BAE Systems’ electromagnetic railgun, a hypervelocity weapon that has a maximum range exceeding 100 miles.

The advanced system uses a massive pulse of electrical power to accelerate a sliding conductive armature down two parallel rails. The armature contains a slug, which breaks free of its sabot upon exiting the weapon at muzzle velocities of up to 4,500 miles per hour (6,600 feet per second). It is a kinetic energy weapon, and the projectile carries no explosive warhead. The Navy envisions its use in naval surface fire support, land strikes, ship defense and surface warfare. Previous announcements from ONR have suggested a potential role in ballistic missile defense as well.

Unlike laser energy weapons, the railgun features over-the-horizon surface strike capability thanks to its projectile’s ballistic flight path. It also offers a key benefit for safety and survivability: with no explosive propellants or warheads, its ammunition magazines are not vulnerable to detonation in the event of a shipboard casualty or an enemy strike. In addition, its rounds are smaller than traditional shells, allowing a vessel to carry more ammunition in the same amount of space. And at $25,000 per round, firing it off is much less costly than expending a Tomahawk or SM-2 missile.

Still test firing? I thought this tech was due for deployment this year?

I also think they are deliberately understating capabilities. 100 mile range? Theoretically this thing should be able to put a projectile into orbit.

This new technology takes targeting computations into a whole new area. I doubt it could even be done without sophisticated software. The projectile isn't guided like a missile. Getting it to shoot high enough to compensate for the earths curvature and fall accurately onto a small target 100 miles away will probably take a lot of testing. If they shoot it high enough to intercept a missile it probably would be able to go higher than 100 miles although anything over 50 would be good. For missiles they would probably have to fire multiple projectiles kind of like a shotgun effect. maybe they could fire a projectile filled with hundreds of smaller ones that could open up like a cluster bomb when it nears the missile. Each fragment would be traveling at the same high velocity so the kinetic energy would be just as effective. A "Phalanx" rail gun.

This has potential to take care of enemy satellites as well.

I'm starting to see images of the next gen "puff the magic dragon" airship. A jet powered stealth aircraft that can fly up to mach 3 at 100,000 feet. The plane being nothing more than a flying rail gun like the Warthog being built around a Gatling gun. The plane could be unseen in international airspace say far of the coast of N. Korea.... If they could get intel on where the mini me dictator is hanging out, maybe trick Dennis Rodman into going back to see his little buddy but with a homing device implanted into his sneakers. Get the coordinates and let fly. We could use Chinese steel to make the projectiles.
