Canada to legalize marijuana by 2018

Canadian marijuana businesses got a confidence boost from a CBC News report that the government plans to legalize recreational marijuana by July 2018, although big questions remain about how the legal market will work in different provinces.

The newly revealed date for the debut of legal cannabis is "exactly along the lines of what we expected," said Neil Maruoka, a stock analyst with Canaccord Genuity who covers publicly traded marijuana companies.

"Certainly there are some companies with more aggressive expansion plans, and this will give some comfort and clarity on what that path forward is going to be," he said.

Stocks in Canadian marijuana companies swelled on Monday. Shares of Canopy Growth Corp., Canada's largest publicly traded marijuana producer, gained more than 11 per cent. Shares of Aphria, another large player, gained about 8.4 per cent.

Scuttlebutt is that marijuana will be legal by 2018, which was one of the promises by the Liberal party in the last election. This should be interesting, and unlike the US, the federal government in Canada has more authority to make this kind of decision.

Good for Canada! Using science , pharmachology and real world evidence to make choices. You won't see much of that $#@! going on in America. It's all about who pays and very unemprical emotion.
While you are correct that the Candadian federal government has more authority to do this that ours does, please note that our feds never let not having authority stop them in their controlest quest.

I am surprised it took this long, honestly.

Well, I support a certain level of devolution even if I think Canada is doing this right. The US simply doesn't and can't function the same way the Canadian federal government can.

I'm surprised it took this long as well. However, it's virtually legal now. There are countless storefronts here in Toronto that sell weed.

Have they announced the taxes yet? I imagine it will be more than the normal sales tax.

That's what they are working out. Currently there is just sales tax.

If they tax it too much, it will just go back underground.

What are cops going to do if they can't bust marijuana smokers?

... they pretty much already don't. They take your weed and send you on your way unless you are obviously dealing (have a certain quantity of pot).
