Cop killer killed his cousin first...

Suspected Cop-Killer Said He 'Smoked' Officer
June 26, 2017 - Michael Christopher Mejia is accused of killing his cousin and Whittier Police Officer Keith on Feb. 20.
The man police believe killed his cousin and a Whittier police officer later the same day described the deadly shootout with police in an interview with sheriff's detectives, according to audio of the interview played in the first of a two-day court hearing Thursday. Michael Christopher Mejia, 26, of Los Angeles, laid out the timeline of the Feb. 20 shootout in the Friendly Hills area of Whittier to two investigators at a downtown Los Angeles jail. The shooting left Officer Keith Boyer dead and Officer Patrick Hazel wounded. Mejia was also wounded in the violent encounter. "I know I smoked this one," Mejia said, apparently referring to Boyer. "Yet the second one. Could not get him."

Mejia described opening the door of his car, which he had just crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Colima and Mar Vista Street, to shield himself from the approaching Boyer. But Mejia said he didn't see Hazel standing behind him. "I opened the door ... to cover myself, but the one in the back, I wasn't focused on him," Mejia said. "I didn't see the one in the back that shot me in the back." Mejia was charged in March with the murder of Boyer and the wounding of Hazel. He was also charged with the murder of his cousin, Roy Torres, 47, of East Los Angeles. Police previously said Mejia shot the two officers as he stepped out of the stolen car he had just slammed into a stopped vehicle.

Police also believe Mejia killed Torres at a home in East L.A. earlier that day following a dispute. Investigators said Mejia stole Torres' car after that early morning shooting. Mejia told the two detectives that he was high on marijuana and other drugs at the time of the shooting. He also told the detectives he blacked out after being shot, and only remembered the incident later after watching news reports about it on television. Investigators have not released any information indicating whether Mejia had drugs in his system the day of the shooting.

Mejia read a transcript of the interview with his lawyer as it played during the hearing. As the video played, Mejia looked back over his shoulder at five of his supporters who were at the hearing. A trio of Whittier officers also attended the hearing, along with Boyer's mother and stepfather. Witnesses who testified Thursday included the girlfriend of Torres and her cousin, who prosecutors said were in the garage of the home when Torres was fatally shot.[ Both cousins, identified as Jane Doe 1 and 2, testified that they both heard and saw the shooting. "All I remember is that a bullet went through his head," said Torres' girlfriend, who was confused, combative and emotional at times on the stand. "I remember it going into his forehead like a cartoon."

Man Found Guilty in Slaying of Georgia Deputy
June 13, 2017 - Jurors deliberated about 30 minutes before finding Christopher Keith Calmer guilty of murder in the 2014 fatal shooting of Monroe County Deputy Michael Norris.
Jurors deliberated about 30 minutes before finding Christopher Keith Calmer guilty of murder in the 2014 fatal shooting of Monroe County deputy Michael Norris. Calmer, 49, who also was accused of wounding deputy Jeff Wilson, additionally was found guilty of two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and single counts of aggravated battery and criminal attempt to commit murder. Calmer nodded his head up and down as the verdict for each charge was read aloud.

    Deputy Michael Norris

The same Upson County jurors who have listened to testimony during the more than week-long trial soon will begin listening to additional testimony in the penalty phase of the trial. Jurors will decide whether to sentence Calmer to life, life without parole or to be executed. Towaliga Judicial Circuit District Attorney Jonathan Adams called Calmer a “scheming manipulator” during his closing argument Monday night, saying Calmer lured the deputies to his parents’ home Sept. 13, 2014, with a plan of shooting at them in hopes they would then kill him.

Adams held up Norris’s bloody uniform shirt and the gun used to shoot him, saying the two deputies had gone to Calmer’s parents’ home near Interstate 75 and Pate Road to help Calmer. Calmer’s uncle had called 911 seeking help because Calmer was suicidal. Calmer, who suffered from chronic pain, made a conscious choice to shoot the deputies, Adams said. Calmer’s attorneys have argued their client suffers from multiple mental illnesses and wasn’t in his right mind at the time of the shooting. Norris died of his wounds. Wilson survived.

San Antonio Officer Dies Following Shootout
June 30, 2017 - Officer Miguel I. Moreno died after he and another police officer were shot by a suspect who was killed during a shootout Thursday afternoon.
A San Antonio police officer has died after a shooting Thursday afternoon north of downtown, police said Friday morning. Officer Miguel I. Moreno, 32, was one of two officers on patrol about 3:40 p.m. in the 200 block of West Evergreen Street, where they attempted to stop two men while responding to a call about a suspicious person. "It is with heavy hearts that we share that our brother, Officer Miguel I. Moreno, #1603, succumbed to his injuries and passed away at 11:11 hrs.," the department posted to Facebook on Friday morning.

As the officers got out of the car, one person opened fire, striking Moreno in the head, and the other officer, Julio Cavazos, in the chin, police Chief William McManus said. One officer returned fire and struck the suspect, who later died, in the head. The other person police were trying to stop was detained. Cavazos has a bullet lodged in his upper torso. He is in serious condition but is expected to survive, McManus said.

Both officers are nine-year veterans of the department. "The only thing those officers were going to do is conduct a field contact. That's all they were going to do," McManus said. It's unclear how many shots were fired. The shooting occurred on the border of San Antonio College, which was placed on lockdown. The lockdown was lifted after about 40 minutes.

Robertson County Deputy Josh Wiley, inset, is in critical condition after being stabbed with a screwdriver by an inmate at a medical clinic on Wednesday.

Deputy Tomisha Jones rushed in to help her partner and found Cole on top of him stabbing him multiple times. She shot at Cole and a struggle ensued that went into the hallway in which the inmate briefly gained control of her weapon and shot Wiley. Jones regained control of the gun and both deputies fired at Cole, killing him. Wiley is listed in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The incident is currently under investigation. "We don’t have answers right now, but we will do our best to find out how he got that screwdriver," Nashville Metro Police Spokeswoman Kristin Mumford told reporters. "As this unfolds, the investigation progresses, we’ll have more certainty on exactly what happened." The attack at the medical complex kept the busy Nashville strip mall on lock down for hours.

Man Convicted in Slaying of Deputy Executed
July 7, 2017 - William C. Morva, who was convicted of killing Montgomery County Deputy Eric Sutphin and a hospital security guard in 2006 was executed by injection Thursday night.
William C. Morva was pronounced dead at the Greensville Correctional Center after the execution occurred without any complications at 9:15 p.m., according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch. At 9 p.m., Warden Eddie Pearson read Morva the death warrant before asking him, "Mr. Morva, do you have any last words?," to which he replied, "No."

William C. Morva, left, and Deputy Eric Sutphin

Morva was in jail awaiting trial on attempted robbery and other charges on Aug. 20, 2006 when he was taken to the Montgomery Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. It was there that he assaulted a deputy who was escorting him, knocking him unconscious and stealing his firearm.

The escaped inmate then confronted hospital security guard Derrick McFarland and shot him in the face. The next day, Morva fatally shot Montgomery County Sheriff's Deputy Eric Sutphin in the back of the head during the manhunt for him. Morva was convicted of capital murder, assault and battery of a law enforcement officer and escape by force.

Missouri Joins 27 Other States With 'Blue Alert'
July 7, 2017 - Missouri soon will have a system to notify the general public when a law enforcement officer is killed or injured.
Patterned after the Amber Alert system for missing children, the so-called "Blue Alert" law was signed Thursday by Gov. Eric Greitens, who had championed the idea. The measure was part of a package of crime-related changes to state law approved by members of the House and Senate in May. In addition to the Blue Alert plan, the new law creates the crime of illegal re-entry. Those who are deported from the United States for committing a crime and then return and commit a felony would also be guilty of illegal re-entry in Missouri. The offense would be a class C felony, punishable by three to seven years.

Missouri soon will have a system to notify the general public when a law enforcement officer is killed or injured.

The measure also adds museums that cater to children under 18 to the list of public places where sex offenders are banned. The Blue Alert provisions are designed to promote public safety and protect police officers. When the law goes into effect, Missouri will be the 28th state to adopt such a program, according to U.S. Department of Justice figures. The measure also enhances penalties for assaults on law enforcement officers. "We must stand up for those who stand guard for us," Greitens said in a release.

Greitens signed the measure at a St. Louis County police site in Pagedale. Among those who were there to witness it were Ballwin Officer Michael Flamion and St. Louis Officer Tom Lake, who were both badly wounded in on-duty shootings. The changes come partially in response to the unrest in Ferguson after the shooting death of Michael Brown by Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson in 2014. The legislation is Senate Bill 34.

N.Y. Trooper Fatally Shot During Domestic Call
July 10, 2017 - Officials say that Trooper Joel R. Davis was fatally shot by Justin Walters, an active-duty soldier who allegedly killed his wife before the trooper arrived.
Two people, including a state police trooper, have died after being shot during a domestic incident in Theresa on Sunday evening. Trooper Jack Keller, a state police spokesman, said that at 8:09 p.m., Justin Walters, 32, of 34371 County Route 46, allegedly shot and killed his wife, whose name was not provided, in the driveway.

A woman whose family lived near the Walters’ white double-wide trailer went outside after the first shots, and suffered a gunshot wound in the upper torso, Trooper Keller said. The woman was taken to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, for treatment of what are believed to be “non-life-threatening injuries.”

    Trooper Joel R. Davis

State police trooper Joel R. Davis, 36, then responded to the scene. “We have numerous calls hearing gun shots prior to the trooper arriving,” he said. Trooper Davis was shot once during the incident, state police said, and was pronounced dead Sunday night. Walters, an active-duty soldier at Fort Drum, surrendered in the driveway of the home as additional law enforcement arrived, and is in custody. Trooper Davis is survived by his wife and three children, state police said.

Roads near the incident were shut down for hours as first responders worked at the scene. Forensic investigators were are on the scene, reviewing evidence. First Deputy Superintendent of the New York State Police Christopher Fiore was is also en route to the scene. A toddler living in the Walters home is currently with Jefferson County Child Protective Services.

Dallas Officers Memorialized One Year Later
July 10, 2017 - Slain Dallas Police Officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith and Patrick Zamarripa, and Brent Thompson, an officer for Dallas Area Rapid Transit, were the focus of an outpouring of sorrow and gratitude on the anniversary of the July 7 ambush.
Commemorations for those who gave their lives and saved lives one year ago in downtown Dallas took place Friday with several ceremonies honoring police. Slain Dallas Police Officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith and Patrick Zamarripa, and Brent Thompson, an officer for Dallas Area Rapid Transit, were the focus of an outpouring of sorrow and gratitude on the first anniversary of the July 7 ambush. Faith Forward Dallas, a coalition of local faith leaders, began the day’s events with a prayer service at Thanks-Giving Square. In attendance were Dallas police officers, elected officials and Odell Edwards, father of Jordan Edwards, who was killed by a Balch Springs police officer earlier this year.

Imam Omar Suleiman, a bilingual professor of Islamic Studies at Southern Methodist University, opened the event by calling to mind why protesters had gathered last July 7 after the deaths of Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La. “When someone becomes violent and decides that it’s their right to take the life of someone else, it doesn’t matter what faith they profess or claim to profess at that point. It doesn’t matter what skin color they have. It doesn’t matter what they’re wearing. At that point, we stand against them, and we stand with their victims,” Suleman said. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins reflected on seeing “grace under fire” as officers ushered him safely into City Hall as shots rang out. “The actions of one lone assailant brought two diametrically opposed forces — peaceful protest and violence — together in one instant,” Jenkins said. “Still, in this terrible moment, we saw such grace.”

A Dallas police Sergeant wears a black ribbon across her badge during a day of remembrance for last year's police ambush organized by Faith Forward Dallas at Thanks-Giving Square in Dallas on Friday, July 7, 2017.

Dallas Police Sgt. Dan Mosher then took the microphone to say a prayer. “We thank you so much that you created us equal but different and that we are all one people on this earth,” Mosher said. “I pray that as we move forward, we would celebrate our differences and learn to love one another.” He then hugged Odell Edwards, Jordan’s father. El Centro College hosted a ceremony focused on renewal at the Student Center downtown, near where the shooting started a year ago. The shooter, Micah X. Johnson, gunned officers down just outside and inside the campus. Johnson holed up in a second-floor hallway where police tried for hours to negotiate with him before sending in a bomb-wielding robot that killed him.

Council member Adam McGough, a program coordinator at the college, said he didn’t have a class that day. He didn’t realize Johnson was in the El Centro building until he had gotten downtown for the first news conference. “I think about it a lot … it’s something that we live and relive every time we walk these streets,” McGough said. The college unveiled a student-made art installation Friday. Paper tree branches decorated a room in the student center and appeared between photos of police officers from that day. Photos were also projected on a white, miniature forest at the front of the room.

Widow of Officer Gives Birth to His Baby Girl
July 26, 2017 - The widow of slain NYPD Det. First Grade Wenjian Liu gave birth early Tuesday in Manhattan to a baby girl conceived from sperm retrieved in the hours after he was fatally shot almost three years ago
The widow of slain NYPD Det. First Grade Wenjian Liu gave birth early Tuesday in Manhattan to a baby girl conceived from sperm retrieved in the hours after he was fatally shot almost three years ago, the NYPD said. Pei Xia Chen delivered baby Angelina, called “Angel” for short, early Tuesday at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center Hospital on the Upper East Side, the NYPD said. Liu, 32, and his partner, Rafael Ramos, 40, were assassinated as they sat in a police car in Brooklyn on Dec. 20, 2014. Both were shot by Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley, 28, a Baltimore man who later committed suicide in a nearby subway station. “The past three years have been the most difficult,” said Liu’s mother, Xiu Yan Li, now a doting grandmother, as she spoke at her Brooklyn home Tuesday night. “This is the best news we’ve gotten. It feels like my son came back today. This is like God gave us a gift.”

Liu’s pregnancy had been top secret, with even the fallen cop’s parents kept in the dark until the baby was born. “She didn’t want to break her family’s hearts if it wasn’t successful,” said Susan Zhuang, 31, a family friend, adding that she jumped for joy when she heard the news while at work as chief of staff for state Assemb. William Colton (D-Brooklyn). Li said she was making a pot of sticky rice when her phone rang at about 10 a.m. Her daughter-in-law was calling to telling her she had a granddaughter. “There were gray clouds,” Li said of life since her son died. “And now the sun has finally come out.” Soon after the phone call, NYPD vehicles arrived at Li’s W. Sixth Street home, just as they did when Liu was killed. Except this time they were taking Li and her husband, Wei Tang Liu, to the hospital to live out a dream they thought died with their son — meeting little Angelina for the first time.

Pei Xia Chen, the wife of NYPD Officer Wenjian Liu, shot to death in 2014, has given birth to a baby girl.

At the hospital, both got to hold their new granddaughter, who weighed in at just under seven pounds. “It was like I was holding my own son,” Li said. Liu and his wife had only been married about three months and had plans to have children when he was killed, the NYPD said on its website. While the mortally wounded Liu was on life support, the NYPD said, Chen “requested that her husband’s semen be preserved” in a quest to one day have his child. An NYPD official said that Liu’s family had wanted word of the birth of Angelina to first be revealed in an internal department message to the rank and file of the NYPD. But news quickly spread based on information from members of an NYPD widows’ organization, the police official said. And the New York Post reported the story Tuesday afternoon on its website.

Chen, smiling while holding her newborn in photos distributed by the NYPD, predicted she was having a daughter from the beginning, according to an NYPD statement. “I got pregnant through the [in-vitro fertilization] procedure and I told my friend, ‘It’s going to be a baby girl.’ My friend said, ‘No, you haven’t even checked the sonograms,’ but I was right!” Back at home Tuesday night, Liu’s father, mostly sad and withdrawn since his son’s killing, took calls from wellwishers. Li beamed as a mound of roses and flower bouquets sat on a entry table. She fielded congratulations, including from an old friend from her native China who she spoke with on FaceTime. “Take care of your new daughter!” the friend said, prompting Li to laugh. The overjoyed grandmother said the family plans to take Angelina to Liu’s grave when she’s a month old. “This way I can tell him he has a daughter.”

Bridge to be Named for Fallen N.Y. Trooper
July 26, 2017 - A bridge in the town of Milton will bear the name of fallen New York State Police Timothy Pratt, who was killed on the job last year.
    — A bridge in the town of Milton will bear the name of Timothy Pratt, the state trooper from South Glens Falls who was killed on the job last year. Pratt died on Oct. 26, 2016, after being hit by an SUV while he was helping a lost semi-trailer driver in front of the trooper barracks in Wilton. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday signed into law a bill to designate the bridge on county Route 33 (Ballard Road) that carries traffic over the Northway as “New York State Trooper Timothy Pratt Memorial Bridge,” according to a prepared statement from the governor’s office. The bridge is at mile marker 38.8.

    Trooper Timothy Pratt

The legislation was sponsored by Sen. Kathy Marchione, R-Halfmoon, and Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, D-Round Lake. “Trooper Timothy Pratt’s devotion to the state of New York and the values of the State Police were unmistakable throughout his nearly 30 years of service,” Cuomo said in a prepared statement. “This action will help ensure his memory and service to his community will continue to be remembered.” Pratt, 55, joined the state law enforcement agency in 1987 and served on the road patrol for most of his career. He was an Air Force veteran.

2nd officer shot in Friday night mayhem dies...

Second police officer shot in Kissimmee dies after Friday night shooting
August 19, 2017 - The second of two police officers shot Friday night in Kissimmee in Central Florida has died, the Kissimmee police department posted on Facebook Saturday afternoon. “It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Sergeant Richard “Sam” Howard. Sam succumbed to his injuries this afternoon,’’ the department said in its posting.
Howard, 36, and Officer Matthew Baxter, 27, were involved in a shootout that began around 9:30 p.m. Friday in Kissimmee when the officers checked out a trio of people in one of the city’s neighborhoods. Baxter began to scuffle with one, Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O’Dell told reporters Saturday morning. Howard, who arrived as a backup, became involved and both officers were struck by gunshots. Neither had time to return fire, O’Dell said. Baxter, a three-year veteran, died Friday night; Howard, a 10-year veteran, died on Saturday.

Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O'Dell, left, holds a news conference Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017 in Kissimmee, Fla. A suspect in the fatal shooting of a police officer in Florida and the grave wounding of a sergeant was arrested several hours after the attack in a bar, authorities said Saturday. Everett Miller faces a charge of first-degree murder for the killing of Officer Matthew Baxter and could face other charges for the wounding of Sgt. Sam Howard, said O'Dell. Kissimmee is located south of the theme park hub of Orlando, Florida.

About an hour and a half later and 160 miles north on Friday night, two Jacksonville police officers were shot while responding to a call reporting a suicidal person on the city’s west side. When the suspect, later identified as Derrick Rashard Brabham, exited the house with a semi-automatic rifle, he traded gunfire with the police, the Jacksonville Times-Union reported. One officer was shot in the stomach, and another was shot in both hands. Brabham was declared dead after being taken to a nearby hospital. The officers, later identified as Michael Fox and Kevin Jarrell, were both in stable condition Saturday morning, according to the Times-Union.

About two hours after the shooting in Kissimmee, police arrested 45-year-old Everett Glenn Miller when he fled to a bar around 11:30 p.m. Miller, a Marine veteran who had been recently taken into custody by the Osecola County Sheriff’s Office over mental health concerns, was found with two guns, a 9mm and .22 revolver, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Miller was charged Saturday morning with resisting arrest and carrying a concealed weapon, according to Osecola County Jail records. An early investigation found that Miller had also threatened police officers online, O’Dell said. He added that his officers intended to use Baxter’s handcuffs on Miller when he is taken to the county jail, and that he expects Miller will also face a murder charge, according to the Sentinel.

Both officers were wearing body armor but no body cameras when they were struck. “They are both wonderful men, family men. They are both very committed to the community,” O’Dell said, according to the Sentinel. “They were the epitome of what you ask for in law enforcement officers.”

A second Florida police officer has died from wounds he suffered in a shooting Friday night, Kissimmee police said on its Facebook page.
Sgt. Richard "Sam" Howard died Saturday afternoon, a day after Officer Matthew Baxter died at the scene of a shooting in the central Florida city near Orlando. Earlier Police Chief Jeff O'Dell said Everett Glenn Miller, 45, had been charged with first-degree murder in Baxter's killing.

The officers were in an area known for drug activity, and Baxter approached Miller and two other men before 9:30 p.m. Friday, the chief said. Howard came as backup. There was a scuffle and gunfire, O'Dell said. "Officers immediately responded to the area and found two of their fallen brothers gravely injured on the roadway," O'Dell said.

Baxter, a three-year veteran of the Kissimmee Police Department, was pronounced dead. Miller is the only one charged of three people the police questioned, the chief said. He also faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.
O'Dell said he was found at a bar and had a 9 mm pistol and a .22-caliber revolver.

Suspect pleads not guilty in Fatal Shooting of Off-Duty Missouri Police Officer...

Suspect Charged in Fatal Shooting of Off-Duty Missouri Police Officer
September 22, 2017 - Sean D. Steward pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and assault in the Aug. 20 fatal shooting of off-duty Lee's Summit Police Officer Thomas Alvin Orr III.
A 22-year-old man charged with firing handgun into a crowd during a party in Westport and killing an off-duty Lee’s Summit police officer made his first court appearance on Thursday. The court entered a plea of not guilty for Sean D. Steward of Kansas City to second-degree murder and assault in the Aug. 20 fatal shooting of Thomas Alvin Orr III. Seward looked down as Circuit Court Judge Mary Weir read the criminal charges. Bond remained at $500,000.

Orr, 30, was fatally shot at a day party at Californos restaurant at 41st Street and Pennsylvania inside the entertainment district. Police said Orr, who also was a middle school resource officer, was not the intended target. According to court records, a witness told investigators that they saw Steward fire a handgun and run down a flight of stairs and out of the bottom lower entrance of the restaurant.

The shooting happened after one man struck another man in the face, causing him to fall to the floor. Steward allegedly fired into the crowd, then sped away in a dark-color Dodge Charger. Another witness told police that several people at the party told her that Steward fired the shots that killed Orr and struck the woman. Police found on social media sites photos from the party with names that witnesses said were identified with Steward. The photos had the Facebook names of “Stew Bird and Cuzzo Jay,” according to court records.

Orr had been with the Lee’s Summit Police Department since March 2015 and began assignment as a middle school resource officer on Aug. 14. Before that, he had worked for the Marshall, Mo., Police Department. Police at first said the victim was shot after arguing with another man. However, further investigation revealed that Orr was an innocent bystander who was not involved in the disturbance. Witnesses said that Orr took photographs at the party. The next hearing in the case was set for Oct. 5. Steward said he plans to hire an attorney.
