Houston Police Officers Shoots Wheelchair Amputee.....

(CNN) -- A Houston police officer shot and killed a schizophrenic, wheelchair-bound double amputee threatening people with a pen at a group home for the mentally ill after authorities said the man advanced on the officer's partner.

"The officers made verbal commands for the suspect to drop whatever he had in his hand, to stay still and to speak with the officers, but the suspect continued to make threats," Jodi Silva, a police spokeswoman, told CNN affiliate KTRK in Houston.

Claunch, who lost an arm and a leg in a train accident, trapped one of the officers with his wheelchair in the corner of a room and attempted to stab the officer with an object that turned out to be a pen.

Officer Matt Marin, "in fear of the safety of his partner and the safety of himself, discharges his duty weapon, striking the suspect," Silva said.

Marin shot Claunch once. He died at the scene, according to investigators.....snip~

I can't go for a Double Amputee putting Two Mobile Cops in any Danger. The article says he trapped one cop with his wheelchair. Like they couldn't have went to some other force than pulling his piece and lighting him up. Plus this was either in a Retirement Home or a Nursing Home. Texa Cops don't mess around. They will shoot ya first.....then ask ya the questions.

"Emotionally disturbed individuals, when threatened, are going to react in most instances, excessively," Dr. Ed Reitman, a clinical psychologist, told KRTK.
"This was an incident that didn't have to take place if the individual -- a police officer -- had been trained in dealing with emotionally disturbed individuals."
The Houston Police Department has officers trained to deal with the mentally ill, though the department would not say whether Marin received training, according to KRTK."

I don't know. I'm thinking there's more here than CNN wants to tell us. Afterall, Cnn blessed the ows movement and excoriated cops in general. Maybe the goal here is to discourage anyone from wanting to serve in that capacity and now they are suggesting that cops take courses in dealing with the mentally ill. Problem is. You never know what a mentally ill person is going to do and to what excess so what kind of course if going to take care of that. Maybe the amputee was committing suicide by cop.

My brother was a cop in New Orleans. A paraplegic guy in an electric wheel chair shot over 40 rounds at him with a tech 9. He dove out of his car and the first shot went into the center of the driver seat head rest. He shot the guy and turned him into a quadriplegic and he lived a couple more years in a hospital bed before he finally died. It was suicide by cop that just took a long time.
