I was listening to some morning radio personalities a short while ago driving in for the blood work required for my annual physical next week - who announced that today was Scrabble Day. I think the ex wound up with our Scrabble game so i'd better get another .. miss it!
Remember fondly our family Scrabble games as a kid. My Mom was a word nerd and won 90% of the time, but she always enjoyed the fake words i made up. Even more, the rationale i would come up with to convince her that if they WEREN'T real, then they SHOULD be!
Any Scrabble memories out there?
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Today, April 13, is National Scrabble Day. Here are some fun facts about the popular game:
A man named Alfred Mosher Butts invented the game, and while it isn’t known who named April 13 as National Scrabble Day, it is the creator’s birthday.
Butts was an amateur artist and was unemployed when he developed the game during the depression. Scrabble was originally named Lexiko and then the name switched Criss-Cross Words.
It wasn’t until 1948 that he got a final name change and a trademark, so he could start to produce the game.
Scrabble is sold in 121 countries with 29 different language versions. Worldwide, over 150 million sets have been sold with sets being found in nearly one-third of American homes.
