To some longtime residents, the multi-tiered waterfall and the Athena statue that tops it are nostalgic reminders of the city’s past, when a Greek developer named Peter Snyder decided to build Midwick View Estates, a 1920s luxury community of Spanish- and Mediterranean-style homes, to rival Beverly Hills or Bel-Air.

For younger Latino and Asian residents, the fountain is mostly a beautiful backdrop to selfies, quinceaneras and weddings. And few of them are aware that the fountain was the centerpiece to a housing development with an ugly side: Midwick View Estates was meant for whites only.

I agree totally with the residents that are against this statue. If the statue "ORIGINALLY" had a chinese or whatever face then Id say you have to live with it. In this case someone came in many years after the fact and decided to reface the statue in this situation the residents do have a right to state their feelings about it.

I could just imagine they myriad of statues of others that suddenly got changed and the uproar it would cause

They could build their own park fountain in their image in a separate location. They don't need to impose upon something which has been there for years.

Showing acceptance of other cultures does not require one to abandon their own.

Your article claims that neighborhood is now 63% Asian and 30% Latino. With those numbers it's highly unlikely that the resident who signed the petition to stop the statue were white.
