Tariffs don't do that. Tariffs are a hidden tax on the Americans who buy foreign goods. It is a dumb idea.

Weren't you supportive of Trump's campaign stand when it came to applying tariffs on goods coming into the US from US owned manufacturing operations in Mexico and other foreign nations?

On Twitter, Breitbart News White House correspondent Charlie Spiering quoted Trump as saying, "We're going to be putting a 20% tax on softwood lumber coming in — tariff on softwood coming into the United States from Canada."

The Commerce Department later announced it had reached a preliminary determination and would impose countervailing duties ranging from 3 percent to 24 percent on imported softwood lumber, with an average of about 20 percent.

One person in the room said Trump threatened that dairy could be next.

The Canadian government, meanwhile, rejected the assessment, calling the duty "unfair and punitive."

They warned the action would have a negative impact on American families who will have to pay more to build or renovate homes. And they said they would sue, if necessary......snip~

Trump wasnt kidding when he said he would protect US dairy farmers from Canada trying to change policy on pricing to cover more dairy ingredients.....Eh!

Wait a minute I thought we were all about free trade and market forces ? Humm. 20% is ridiculous. As for dairy farmers they get screwed by the middleman and government controled dairy market anyway. Let the middlemen take the hit, keep the spirit of free trade and invite competition.

Read the link Resister has up on the issue. Tell us how Canada is all about free trade. Trump also said fair to go along with free trade. Didn't he?

The US over regulates and over taxes its own industries making them less competative. The solution isn't to increase tariffs. The solution is reduce the corporate tax rate and ease the strangling regulations we impose on our own producers.

Wonder if this tarrif will make that number rise or fall?

If it makes the price go up, how does that work? I know this question seems obvious but I think there may be more to it.
Plan on it going up. This is classic. The tariff will help the lumber industry, that is the loggers and timber owners because they will be able to charge more. Homebuilders will be passing it along to their customers. Homeowners will be paying more. I think the cost of that deck I plan on building this summer just went up significantly. Thanks Donnie.

Rarely do we agree but on this I concur. The American consumer will be the one ultimately taking the hit on this.
