Indeed, the point here is not that one is better, but both are evil, even if both promised good.
After WWI the German economy tanked. Keynes, The Economic Consequences of the Peace, blamed the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler came along as the charismatic leader the Germans hoped would save them, and clung to that belief even as the Allies firebomber their cities and unto the Russians entered Belin (based on some cable show I recently watched).

But good intentions, damn the consequences, are 99% of liberal arguments.
You can't get a large portion of a large population to follow you if the ideology doesn't appeal to millions and give them hope.
Not equating, but sometimes think that's all politics is these days.
