I'm not a frequent playgoer, but I read an article in last Sunday's paper about a new production called 'Holmes and Watson' at the Herberger Theatre beginning this weekend, and felt compelled to go. I went online right away and managed to get the last available Orchestra section seat for the opening on Saturday night.
I also began reading the first volume in a proposed trilogy blending the Holmes canon with Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos last night. I know at least three successful authors who are making a good living adding to the veritable library of - and filling the public appetite for - more Holmes books. (One, Bonnie MacBird, has written one of the finest, 'Art in the Blood', ever.) People on both sides of the Atlantic wait impatiently for the three new Sherlock episodes we get each year from the BBC, and CBS's Elementary is wrapping up its fifth season as a highly rated show.
I can't think of any literary personality who even comes close to equaling the durability and universal fascination that attaches to Sherlock Holmes.
