Tesla’s solar roof pricing is cheap enough to catch fire:

Humanity has gone through several energy revolutions. I understand that our public school students have fits over fossil fuels- that benefited humanity in untold ways. But the future is here.

The sun can power a galactic empire: [the Luddites can sit in the corner and suck on whatever they wish. I suggest c**]]

Tesla Inc. has begun taking $1,000 deposits for its remarkable solar roof tiles—to be delivered this summer at a price point that could expand the U.S. solar market.

Tesla will begin with production of two of the four styles it unveiled in October: a smooth glass and a textured glass tile. 1 Roofing a 2,000 square-foot home in New York state—with 40 percent coverage of active solar tiles and battery backup for night-time use—would cost about $50,000 after federal tax credits and generate $64,000 in energy over 30 years, according to Tesla’s website calculator.

That’s more expensive upfront than a typical roof, but less expensive than a ty
pical roof with traditional solar and back-up batteries. The warranty is for the lifetime of your home.

“The pricing is better than I expected, better than everyone expected,” said Hugh Bromley, a solar analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance who had been skeptical about the potential market impact of the new product. Tesla’s cost for active solar tiles is about $42 per square foot, “significantly below” BNEF’s prior estimate of $68 per square foot, Bromley said. Inactive tiles will cost $11 per square foot.

Taxpayers have to pay 30% of its cost. Why should I be fleeced for your roof?
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

Because you are bringing the future faster.

It is much cheaper than what the Global Warmists have in store for you.

    Interesting.

It would reduce my electrical bill by about half.

The tiles are definitely better looking than the current panels. The warranty is good but most warranties only count for the original owner. They're handling their own installation, which is also better for warranty matters.

I think solar is the way to go -- on a residential basis -- but there's a grid-tie issue. A lot of states have passed bills allowing customers who produce their own energy to sell it back to the utilities. That requires installing grid-tie solar, but the problem is that when the utility company has a black/brown-out, your solar system goes down too. Because, you can't be introducing electricity into the grid when workers are working on the lines.

What I (personally) would prefer is an off-grid system that produced my entire power needs.

The tiles are pricey, but they'll probably come down eventually. Comparison-wise, I think the panels are still a better production value for the dollar. And, they do all kinds of tricks -- lay flat in high winds, turn and "shake" to remove snow load. They're getting pretty spiff. It'll be interesting to watch these shingles.

Great news , but I might argue that this will really be our first "energy revolution" . Up until now we've just found different stuff to burn to produce and distribute energy , with the exception of hydro.
But watch the gas and fuel oil prices fall in response , temporarily of course.

Initial pricing is always high. It will come way down.

Hmm, rough math contends that you shell out $50K now (plus some additional money added to the national debt) so you can break even in about 25 years. No thanks. Do we know the lifespan of these roof tiles? How much more money would you make investing that $50K elsewhere over a quarter century? I think investing in big oil would be a wiser fiscal move. I'm totally for efficient solar, but this doesn't seem all that efficient when it takes so long just to recoup your initial investment.
