400,000 were promised student loan forgiveness. Now they are panicking

More than 400,000 student loan borrowers may have placed their faith in a government program with an uncertain future.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program promises to cancel any remaining student debt for those who work for the government or nonprofits if they have been making on-time payments for 10 years. Many teachers, public defenders, Peace Corps workers, and law enforcement officers fit the qualifications.

This October marks the 10th year of the program and the first time anyone will have made enough payments to get their debt wiped away. It's unclear how much the program will cost the government when its starts to forgive those debts.

Make student loans dischargeable in bankruptcy and the problem will sort itself out in a few years.

Politicians create zero jobs in the private sector. They do have 1.4 million paper pushers working for the Federal Government that they can take credit for though.

They used to be discharged under bankruptcy ... Bush and the GOP outlawed that along with eliminating Pell Grants ... then collapsed the economy.

People SHOULD think before borrowing money, but, at the same time, if these people have taken jobs in areas they would not normally have taken, just because they were promised debt forgiveness, that, too, is a problem.

This program has enticed doctors to backwoods hospitals, nurses to reservations, and other professionals to places they would not normally have worked. The benefits have been advertised as part of the job package.

I think it's going to be tough to pull out of that commitment.
