The John 3:16 Sports Fan Is Serving a Life Sentence

Rainbow Man was a fixture in American sports culture in the 1980s. Rollen Stewart, wearing a rainbow-colored wig, appeared behind NFL goal posts, near Olympic medal stands and even at the Augusta National Golf Club just as TV cameras focused on athletes in the foreground. And that's when Stewart held up a sign reading, "John 3:16," a verse in the Bible.

Stewart's fame eventually got him a Budweiser commercial and inspired a skit on "Saturday Night Live."

However, Stewart ran afoul of the law several times, the last of which was when he took two men and a maid hostage in a hotel room near Los Angeles International Airport.
