Cali’s universal health plan to cost more than entire budget

Cali’s universal health plan to cost more than entire budget

Well, that is a buzz kill.

The price tag is in: It would cost $400 billion to remake California’s health insurance marketplace and create a publicly funded universal health care system, according to a state financial analysis released Monday.

California would have to find an additional $200 billion per year, including in new tax revenues, to create a so-called “single-payer” system, the analysis by the Senate Appropriations Committee found. The estimate assumes the state would retain the existing $200 billion in local, state and federal funding it currently receives to offset the total $400 billion price tag.

The cost analysis is seen as the biggest hurdle to creating a universal system, proposed by Sens. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, and Toni Atkins, D-San Diego.

California is way too big to try and do this on the state level, they need to go by county.

This is the problem America has: they want to model a universal plan off a gold plate plan.

The article doesn't seem to address whether those amounts are offset by people paying premiums out of their paychecks ie medicare. Did I miss something? Just curious.

They could just do what Ontario (in Canada) does and tax the $#@! out of things that will lead to health care costs - tobacco, alcohol, gas, so forth. Makes being a smoker, heavy drinker and car user more expensive. There seems to be more incentive to not smoke, drink moderately and to use alternative methods of transportation that should keep you more active. When pot is legalized in 2018, I suspect they will tax the crap out of that, also. A pack of cigarettes in the US is like $6 compared to $12 in Canada, for example.

California is pretty large to be coming up with this plan on the state level. They have more people than Canada, and Canada breaks it down by province and territory.

Tax bills have to pass through the legislature. Americans are not keen on voting for high taxes. Or representatives who will do it for them.

I hope they do. It will be a clear demonstration of failure.

It's also going to cost far more than 400 billion dollars.

Health care can sometimes be worth it. However, the potential cost of this plan is astronomical and completely unrealistic. They need to come up with something better and more affordable before they plan any tax increases.
