Not sure how this affects the army's new rifle search.

The Army is developing a more powerful bullet that’ll penetrate body armor capable of stopping 5.56 mm rounds, the Army’s Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley told senators on Thursday.
“The 5.56 round, we recognize there is a type of body armor it does not penetrate, and adversarial states are selling that stuff on the Internet for about 250 bucks,” Milley explained during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, adding, “We think we have a solution … We know we have developed a bullet that can penetrate these new plates.”

The Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia, is testing different caliber rounds, which range between the 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm rounds used by U.S. troops, according to Army Times.
Milley stressed that the focus is on increased lethality for the bullet, not on a new rifle. When asked if the higher-caliber round would require a new rifle, Milley responded that “it might, but probably not,” though he went on to say that there are off-the-shelf rifle options for the service.

Peter, did you see the new material that is being developed by an AF cadet in a lab? It has the consistantsy of pudding and objects can easily penetrate it a slow speeds, like a finger or spoon, but when a HV object impacts it, bam, instant bulletproof!

Sorry no link, saw a brief mention on FOX, still in the RD phase, very secret formula.

I didn't know we had body armor able to stop decent rifel rounds. Soon all soldiers will require rocket launchers or .50 cals. The drive to kill is one thing that never dies.

If we have it someone else will have it eventually, its getting more dangerous for soldiers all the time.

Yes. The body armor is pretty good. And heavy.

That was my first thought, also.

What is the difference between these and cop-killers? Those also pierce body armor, do they not?

There are very few pistol rounds that will penetrate level IIIA and up body armor. The "cop killer" bullet is largely a myth. One of the few able to do so is the 5.7x28mm round, but only the 17 grain bullet will do that from a pistol. It will penetrate level III armor at normal pistol engagement ranges. However, it is not common and the 17 grain bullet is actually restricted for sale to law enforcement. My wife has one.
