SUICIDE BOMBERS KILL 21 in Attempt to Kill an Afghani Govenor.....

    http://news.yahoo.com/suicide-bomber...142344816.html

CHARIKAR, Afghanistan (AP) — A team of six suicide bombers — some wearing explosive vests — stormed a provincial governor's compound in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, killing 22 people in the latest high-profile attack to target prominent Afghan government officials, authorities said.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in the Parwan provincial capital of Charikar, some 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Kabul. The province is home to Bagram Air Field, a sprawling base for U.S. and NATO troops.

The coordinated assault is the most recent in a string of spectacular Taliban attacks within an hour's drive of Kabul — a worrying sign of the insurgency's strength near the heart of the country and its determination to target Afghanistan's nascent leadership. The violence is a sign of NATO's broader struggles in the east, where persistent insurgent attacks forced the alliance to pull forces back from outlying patrol bases and outposts. The coalition, which plans to send 10,000 troops home by the end of the year, is considering whether to move forces from Taliban heartlands in the south to reinforce troops fighting insurgents in the east.

Southern provinces like Kandahar and Helmand are the Taliban's traditional stronghold, while the east is a base of operations for many Pakistani based Taliban and international terrorist affiliates like al-Qaida and the Haqqani network.

Seventy-four French troops have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001. About 4,000 French troops are taking part in NATO-led operations against the Taliban, and France says 1,000 troops will be brought home next year, with a full withdrawal of combat forces in 2014.

Says the Taliban has pulled off successful attacks that Coalitions forces have pulled back.....that this was another Afghani Official Targeted. It also notes the Disticiton with those Paki-Taliban as opposed to the Afghani' Taliban. Thoughts?

Haqqani chief of suicide operations designated as terrorist...

U.S. targets militant group's chief of suicide operations
November 5th, 2012 - The chief of suicide operations for a Pakistan-based terror organization has been officially listed as a "terrorist" by the United States, coinciding with a similar action by the United Nations on Monday.
Qari Zakir, chief of suicide operations for the Haqqani Network, was labeled a specially designated global terrorist under the authority of an executive order, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced in a written statement. The designation blocks Zakir from all of his property that is subject to U.S. jurisdiction and prohibits any U.S. nationals from engaging in any transactions on behalf, or for the benefit, of Zakir.

In addition to the designation by the United States, Zakir and the Haqqani Network were listed by the United Nations sanctions committee in actions that require all U.N. member states to implement a freeze of assets, a travel ban and an arms embargo against both entities. The United States designated the Haqqani Network as a foreign terrorist organization in September. While the leadership of the group is based in northwestern Pakistan, the group is responsible for a series of deadly attacks in Afghanistan.

In addition to his role as the head of suicide operations for the Haqqani network, Zakir, also known as Abdul Rauf, is the operational commander for the group in the Afghan provinces of Kabul, Takhar, Kunduz and Baghlan. In the announcement, the State Department said Zakir had a hand in many high-profile attacks carried out by his organization, including the September 2011 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kabul. Sixteen Afghans, including six children, were killed in that attack.
