When in reality after 911 it was a great opportunity for him to rally the world around the US even more. But of course perhaps just as or even more damaging was Hillary in 2011 just flat out strait up acknowledging that the US is now in the old Soviet business of sponsoring revolutions. and for what? Muammar $#@!ing Gaddafi?

Unless we're assuming the US turns into a dictatorship, it must still reasonably manage the the morale high ground or risk another Vietnam where they won every battle and totally lost the war.

More or less, the current world game rule is set by the US, if they don't even play by it themselves then a lot of bets are off.
Returning to the mid east situation though , I feel part of this might be the US just also losing hold of control on the Saudi's as well, and increasingly the Saudi's feel they can do their own thing and as long as that doesn't include invading Israel the US will be all bark and no bite. (and also, the shale thing is two sided, yes it means the US isn't as reliant on the Saudis, but the reverse is also true, the Sauds no longer feel the US market is as important. )
Regarding your last point- correct, Saudi Arabia knows we no longer need their oil. So the ties that bound us together don't really exist any longer.

I don't know why some continue to believe that there is something someone could do which would result in peace in the Middle East. This is an impossible goal.

This region has been in a state of bitter conflict since the beginnings of recorded history. It will not change. Any attempts to reach a peaceful solution in the Middle East is a drill in futility. The best anyone can hope for that it is contained to that region.

    Update- crisis continues.

Two months into the isolation campaign, the energy-rich Persian Gulf nation has used its billions to strengthen its economy and security. It has announced reforms and bolstered ties with Turkey and Iran that could potentially reshape the region and its alliances for years.

Efforts by the United States to mediate between its close allies have not succeeded. Instead, the crisis is acrimoniously playing out in diplomatic and legal venues.

“It’s now personal, which in some ways makes it more difficult to find a way for both sides to step down,” said Perry Cammack, a Middle East analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “This is likely to fester for some time.”

I see the experts are saying that the conflict turned personal. That is the most dangerous kind of conflict.

In this case Qatar is Sunni. They are teaming with Shia. Saudi Arabia is leading a block of Sunnis against their fellows- Qatar. I expect something more down to earth is at issue- not religion. Someone probably screwed the wrong wife. Or something like that.

I'm not so sure about that one.

Well my point it is not part of the typical Sunni-Shia split.
