    Are Amphibious Assaults Still Relevant?

    Are Amphibious Assaults Still Relevant?

I think they suffer the same fate as airborne forces. Defensive tactics make their lives difficult.

Amphibious assaults: antiquated or awe-inspiring? That's the question Stars and Stripes posed as it covered an amphibious assault during BALTOPS 2017, NATO's annual military exercises in the Baltic Sea.

The exercise capped off with an amphibious invasion by U.S. Marines from Marine Corps Europe Africa. Marine reservists from the 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines disembarked from the landing ship USS Arlington, coming ashore on the Polish coast in LCAC hovercraft and Amtrac amphibious vehicles.

The last major amphibious invasion took place during the Korean War at Inchon. Since then the U.S. has threatened a seaborne assault. For example, U.S. Marines on ships tied up thousands of Iraqi troops during the 1991 Persian Gulf War who expected them to storm Kuwait from the sea. But the U.S. hasn't actually staged one of these in an active conflict in decades. During 1991 and the 2003 Iraq wars, the Marines invaded over land.

Against a defended beach, who'd do it, right?

But given helicopters and fact enemy has to defend in depth, the enemy still may not be able to defend every angle and its in those spots wherr an amphibious landing can throw alot of equipment on the ground that can be difficult to do by air.

Storming the beach at Normandy? No.....

In general modern armed forces would not have the determination to soak up enough casualties to "storm a beach" in the traditional manner. This is not a criticism of their courage or determination, but rather a recognition of changing realities.

I don't have an answer- I know big army has options for airborne forces to overcome these new realities.

The armed forces or the citizenry of the country? What reality change has taken place where modern militaries have lost their determination?

The armed forces are drawn from the citizenry, so both. Modern people have been conditioned to think that casualty numbers that are actually ridiculously, historically, low are too many. Think about it. On D-day there were more Kia in one day than the entire 15 year long war in Afghanistan.

I think it depends on the reasoning behind the war.

Amphibious assaults are difficult, but I think they remain a viable option under the right conditions. Whether one will ever be done again on the scale of the Normandy landings is doubtful, but there are times when a beachhead may need to be secured and doing so from the inland side may not be possible.

Does anyone know if the Amphibious Warfare School in Little Creek is still in operation? After attending it back in the day, I knew I would much rather take my chances jumping in and seizing an airhead in enemy territory than trying to seize a beachhead. I'd rather leave that insanity to the Jarheads and the Squids.
