    Solitary Confinement Limit

The federal government is imposing a cap of 15 days on holding prisoners in solitary confinement.

Once the bill tabled in the House of Commons Monday passes into law, the Correctional Service of Canada will have an 18-month transition period, during which time the cap will be set at 21 days.

The time limits are subject to safety and security requirements, as well as ensuring reasonable alternatives are available.

There will be an independent review process if the cap is not met, or if an inmate is placed in segregation more than four times in a 90-day period.

Monday's announcement comes just weeks before a lawsuit challenging the practice of solitary confinement was scheduled to go to trial on July 4. The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, which launched the legal action, is not commenting because the case is set to begin.

This seems like a positive change. Prison is not just about punishment and extensive solitary confinement could be classified as cruel and inhumane.

Prolonged solitary confinement is a form of torture. It is unethical and barbaric.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.

At the age of 17 I was put in solitary for 90 some odd days in the county lockup. One hour of Recreation (lol) in a cage (after 30 days) and 3 5 minute showers a week.

In state prisons you have CM or controlled management for the most incorrigibles, every 6 months the inmates gets a hearing to determine if they will be released into general pop. If they had the most minor infraction, see you in 6 more months. It is not uncommon for some to be their years or even a decade or better.

It's use is to common, but for the very worst, it is about the only option, some lifers enjoy it and if let out will assault a CO just to go back "home"

And we lecture countries on human rights lol.

I wonder what Canadian Authorities plan on doing with the hyper violent incorrigibles who assault other inmates and staff any time the opportunity comes up.

Like I said, for those types, what other options are there. Should be interesting to see how they will make a special exception for the super hard cases. Unless the criminals in Canada are more "civilized"

There are different types of solitiary confinement. Protective Custody is solitary confinement and most times voluntary.

Inmates placed in solitary for longer periods have a history of hurting other inmates and staff and are classified as being a danger to both if removed from solitary.

As long as the govt is willing to pay for the lawsuits and medical costs and judiciary costs and early disability retirement costs.

Yep, 3 types I am aware of PC or protective custody AC or administrative confinement, usually pending a disciplinary hearing that often leads to DC or disciplinary confinement for an infraction, usually 15 to 90 days depending on the severity of the offense.

And # 4 CM the worst of the worst.

Interestingly, at least in FL they have PM units or protective management for people who would otherwise be in PC long term. It is just like Open pop. but the main compound must be isolated on their units when PM moves on the main compound. I think the courts mandated it's existence. PM units are mostly ex cops, snitches and child molesters.

I don't know if the solitary confinement as depicted in a movie like the Shawshank Redemption even exists any more. Most often now the difficult ones are in a single cell surrounded by others in a single cell and let out for an hour day alone.
