I was raised catholic, my brother in law my wifes brother is catholic, his wife is Orthodox. One christmas her preist was at the house and he explained his view of catholicism. He said the church keeps changing to keep parishoners. They have made many changes over the years to the mass, to whats allowed. Examples, they were always against cremation, recently they know allow cremation. They never allowed you once divorced to get married in the church again, im told they now do. They never had singing in church when I was a kid now they do. Theyve made many many changes and other religions do not agree with that. Orthodox so he told us is the same as it was long ago with no changes.
The catholic church has lost millions of faithful, the greatest generation was big on the church the baby boomer not. The church now relies on hispanics who are their largest group of faithful. They say thats why this pope was chosen, I believe hes argentinian and he defends illegal immigrants. This pope has turned older catholics against him.

One example would be position on marriage between same sex couples where various religions/Chriches have taken postions:
Things may have changed since 2015 but were I religious I would find it awkward in a church whose position varied with mine, I mean, say I was the father of a gay who wanted to marry, where would/should my loyalties lie.
I had thought there were churches/religions where local chruches were free to decide.

Alas, this is the ultimate consequence of private interpretation: the church must conform to me. The modern aversion to authority and order, like so much of the modern character, has a theological origin.
The role of the Church is not to obscure the truth so one feels better about his personal opinions.
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.
