    Modern day slavery.

This is something i heard about on the c.n.n. "freedom project." the way it was originally supposed to go was as if it were a carbon footprint for slavery, something to disassociate other countries from those practising slavery and maybe incur penalties on them financially.

Then, it clicked with me... why aren't they running away? the answer is simple - they get food and shelter, something that they would not get on the other side of the fence. so, why all the fuss?

The fuss id about their living conditions; can they live better while they pay back their debts? often, their families owe debts to others, and, these debts are bought up so that they can earn a little and pay a lot of interest to the slavers, while still surviving. i wonder if they can have a postal address and bank account while working there? if so, cool, if not, maybe a slight policy shift could allow them these basic services?

So, now i wonder why they all don't join this slavery - it is better to be inside than outside, yes? think, if all of the squatters were to flock into the building industry, soon there will be so much investment the state could tax various things that are built and allow basic things to the slaves like welfare? this is far better than the non reactive state of squatter type activity, for all sides.

Not sure if I understand your point as it's pretty generalized and not directed towards any current or past situation.

You seem to be arguing that slavery is a good thing .. but it's only a good thing AFTER the slaves community and self preservation methods have been extinguished by the slavers?

They were most likely doing quite fine before they were turned into slaves. Keep in mind it only takes a single season of lost crops to reduce a thriving community into oblivion. THe slaves would need a lot of resources to start over.

So while it may be beneficial for survival reasons to not run away, they wouldn't have to be set to choice if they were left alone in the first place no?

Well, if they had somewhere to go, then that would be okay too.

International Labour Organization (ILO) Report says over 40 million people trapped in slavery...

Report: 40 million live in slavery, 125 million in child labor
Sept. 19, 2017 -- Forty million people worldwide are enslaved and another 125 million kids work child labor jobs, new research compiled by three organizations indicates.
The non-governmental activist group Walk Free Foundation, the intergovernmental agency International Labor Organization and the United Nations' International Office for Migration presented the statistics during the U.N. General Assembly in New York. The combined efforts and databases are the first unified effort to present the full scope of world slavery.

Unified data released Tuesday by the Walk Free Foundation, the International Labor organization and the International Organization for Migration indicate that 40 million people live in slavery, and another 125 million in child labor.

The research estimates that women account for 71 percent of all people live under slavery. Of the 40 million enslaved people, about 25 million are engaged in forced labor and another 15 million are in forced marriages. The International Labor Organization released a companion paper indicating that of the 125 million people age 5 to 17 in child labor, nearly 71 percent work in agriculture. The rest are in service or industrial sectors of their country's economies.

The number of laboring children represents one in ten kids worldwide, the International Labor Organization said. "It is the first time in history that there is a united number," Andrew Forrest, Walk Free's chairman, said. "There can now longer be any denial that, as [British Prime Minister] Theresa May puts it, the greatest scourge affecting humanity right now is modern slavery."

Report says over 40 million people trapped in slavery
Wed, Sep 20, 2017 - GLOBAL CRIME : The findings prompted calls for stronger labor rights, improved governance of migrants and better victim identification
More than 40 million people were trapped as slaves last year in forced labor and forced marriages, according to the first joint effort by key anti-slavery groups to estimate the number of victims worldwide of the international crime. The International Labour Organization (ILO), human rights group Walk Free Foundation and the International Organization for Migration said 40.3 million people were victims of modern slavery last year — but added that this was a conservative estimate. They estimated that 24.9 million people were trapped working in factories, on construction sites, farms and fishing boats, and as domestic or sex workers, while 15.4 million people were in marriages to which they had not consented.

Almost three out of every four slaves were women and girls, and one in four was a child, with modern slavery most prevalent in Africa, followed by Asia and the Pacific, the report said. “Forced labourers produced some of the food we eat and the clothes we wear, and they have cleaned the buildings in which many of us live or work,” the groups said in a report released yesterday, adding that the crime was prevalent in all nations. The findings mark the first time the groups collaborated on an international estimate and prompted calls for stronger labor rights, improved governance of migrants, action to address root causes of debt bondage and better victim identification. “Given that a large share of modern slavery can be traced to migration, improved migration governance is vitally important to preventing forced labour and protecting victims,” they said.

Previously the groups had used different data, definitions and methodologies, said Houtan Homayounpour, a specialist on forced labor at the ILO. “There’s been many different numbers out there for many years. Now finally everyone has come together and has worked on developing one global estimate that becomes a reference point,” Homayounpour said. The estimate compared with a Walk Free finding last year that 45.8 million people were slaves and an ILO figure of 21 million in forced labor, but Homayounpour said the numbers cannot be used to show progress or failure in anti-slavery efforts. The report found more than a third of the 15 million victims of forced marriage were aged under 18 when wed, and nearly half of those were younger than 15. Nearly all were female.

The ILO also released a separate report showing 152 million children were victims of child labor, which amounted to nearly one in every 10 children worldwide, with almost half of those engaged in hazardous work. More than two-thirds of these children were working on a family farm or in a family business, with 71 percent overall working in agriculture. The calculation of forced labor included the private economy, forced sexual exploitation and state-imposed labor.
