The Greek restauranteur who lives next door grows figs in his back yard, and this morning he gave some to us, as he has done several times in the past.
The first time I was unsure and skeptical. My experience with figs had been limited to the dried variety, so I really didn't know what to expect. Those small, greenish-yellow, bulbous things did not, frankly, look very appetizing.
They are, in fact, one of the most delicious fruits you will ever taste. With most things you eat, there is practically always something you can compare it to; you can say, "Well, it tastes a bit like" this or that. I can't think of anything to compare the taste of figs to. It's a fairly mild taste - sweet and fruity - and, I must say, somewhat addictive. It's probably a good thing that Theo only gives us a small plate of them; otherwise, I'd probably make myself ill eating too many.
