I am pretty sure the director of the FBI knew what he was doing, and knew that it was not illegal.

His meetings with Trump were not confidential, and the information that they exchanged was not classified.
When the President of the United States asks the director of the FBI to obstruct justice, the FBI director has a responsibility to the public to make it known.

and when the AG tells him to lay off an official investigation, that's perfectly legal

When this circus started I stated that Comey's scribbling of his thoughts of his meetings with Trump were not personal property, but rather government property. That is elementary.


Now it seems Comey's scribbling, in part, was classified. (Because of the topic).

He shared this stuff with his law school buddy- a violation of the Espionage Act. Like Petraeus.

As usual you are incorrect. First, I cited to The Hill. Second, Fox retracted its claim that the memos were top secret. In fact they were classified at a lower level- but still classified.

There was another thing we learned about Comey and his affinity for memorializing all of his conversations. He didn't do this routinely as we were breathlessly told by the media. This was supposed to add more credibility to his memos. He conveniently did not record his recollection of all conversations he had with his superiors. Only those with Trump.

This suggests to me that he had a hidden agenda.

To be fair, the classification was made retroactively, but anyone with any experience in the field knows that is routinely the case.

If Comey actually tries to claim that the classification being initiated retroactively mitigates his culpability, he's either lying or a complte incompetent boob not fit to lead any government agency.

This is untrue. The document may have been portion marked after the fact. The information was classified at the time Comey wrote the memos. If he failed to portion mark it as he wrote each memo shame on him.

Retroactively classifying something occurs when the information itself was not originally classified. In my twenty years, I can think of no more than one or two instances where information was retroactively classified. I can think of a few cases where the information was originally classified secret. We determined ways to exploit the material and regraded the information from secret to top secret.
