    Hemmings was not a slave inasmuch as Jefferson never kept her as a slave. She was free to go whenever she wanted. One must consider the society of the times. Black women were subject to slavery by many early Americans. If she had left, she probably would have ended up being a real slave........

    She was free togo. Period. Unless you can back up your claim, my statement stands. Jefferson didn't believe that people should be "owned" however, he was one against many. Hemmings was given all the things white women had. Her own home, for example. Justbecause she stayed with him does not indicate ownership. Jeffereson had to deal with the mode of society of the times.
