This is what I do for a living. We charge based on how we can maximize our margin - from commercial insurance plans. You can charge CMS all you want, they're paying you cost period, it gets settled like a tax return based on your actual costs.

Actual costs are driven by... wait for it.

    Can you guess?
not capitalism. They charge what the government allows. There is little competition.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

    Seriously...
It was not an ER visit. It was urgent care. Because my skin was broken I went for a rabies shot.

I doubt it had rabies. Less than one hour with no x-rays, no special equipment, and barely any care should not have cost 26k.

I don't much care what your opinion is.

I don't believe you understand what insurance is.

That is true of a lot of people. Perhaps a majority.

At the end of May I required emergency surgery. Unfortunately, the hospital doesn't accept the plan I have because it was purchased under the ACA. I coughed up my $6,000 deductible and although Anthem has kicked in some dough, I'm sitting with almost $30,000 in remaining bills. Because it was an emergency, Anthem didn't write me off completely, but they wanted the hospital to get me stable and ship me off to a hospital "within" their group. Neither of the two other choices were willing to take me as a patient with the surgery already completed. I wouldn't have either under the circumstances. Something goes wrong, who's at fault? So who do you think I should have a beef with or should I just cough up another 30 grand?
The entire process is ridiculous. I doubt it would have been better under the HMO system. In fact, it sounds like the same issue. If you can't be treated by the subscribed medical network, all bets are off. If you don't buy the Platinum insurance plans, you can be left with massive debt.
In quoting my post, you affirm and agree that you have not been goaded, provoked, emotionally manipulated or otherwise coerced into responding.

Then make it voluntary for the third which wants it and have them pay for it.
