Cop shoots 911-calling woman dead with body camera off

MINNEAPOLIS – Family, residents and this city's mayor are demanding to know why a woman was fatally shot by a police officer over the weekend and why the officer's body camera was off at the time, reports CBS Minneapolis.

"I mean ask anybody here, they're shocked," said Corey Birkholz, a student of Justine Damond, a south Minneapolis woman who taught meditation classes and spiritual healing at the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community. "It doesn't seem like she'd be the kind of person to get shot in an alley," Birkholz said.

His feelings were shared by more than 200 people who gathered for a vigil Sunday near the spot where Damond died hours earlier.

A woman who you met her -- was just peaceful," a neighbor at the vigil said.



Investigators with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said that at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, a 911 call was made about a possible assault in the area.
They said a Minneapolis police officer fired his or her weapon, killing a woman.

A man claiming to be Damond's son said in a Facebook video that she's the one who called 911 after hearing a noise in the alley near their home.

I'm convinced that more and more twitchy cowards are somehow finding their way into the ranks of many police departments.

No, we don't have all the facts in this case, but...come on.

When confronted with a possible threat to one's safety these days, it's beginning to look like something of a crap shoot. Who is more likely to kill me? The criminal, or the cop they send to "protect and serve" me?

I believe that the more stories like this are given the light it needs, there will be a reckoning. I've always said that it will take someone that the pro-cop/never wrong cop crowd cares about, to bring the change needed in addressing this issue.

Police shootings are not going to subside until threats on them and police officers being executed stops.
Thats not an excuse for bad behavior or criminal acts by police, thats just a fact.

Theres another component thats needs to be addressed that of course wont be and thats the destruction of the police when they lowered the standards to be politically correct and inclusive.

Police standards need to returned to what they were, physical accruity and health standards, criminal backgrounds need to be rolled back to where you had to have a "spotless" record to be a cop.

"SIZE MATTERS" period no discusssion needed. A 6'2 male in good condition has self confidence when hes up against people out of control. When you put 5' 6 police officer 140lbs and females 5'4 110 lbs against non compliant men, who may be drunk, high or mentally unstable, trust me they know they are $#@!ed in a physical situation and that adrenaline starts pumping and your heart beat shoots through the roof and they are scared.
What happens to people like that ? they make $#@!ed up distorted decisions.

Police standards need to completely redone and get the scrubs, x convicts and those too damn small out of police depts, rewrite disciplinary standards and totally review training.

Make no mistake Police Officer is an extremely physical job the degree depends where you are in major cities cops can be in 6 physical altercations or more in one 12 hr shift. Thats outright fighting, to having to physically get control of someone. You need people that have the confidence to do that without being scared $#@!less and going for their guns.

For gods sake I never heard of this kind of constant crap in the 28 yrs I was in the business

How many near-perfect physical specimens with flawless records, test scores, psychological evaluations, etc., are ever going to be interested in being cops? Enough to fill the ranks of the PD in even one major American city?

You do not have to be perfect, but you must meet a standard. Yearly physical exams and if you are overweigt they used to give you 4-6 months to lose it. You took a physical accruity test yearly if you didnt pass same thing x amount of time to train and get conditioned to be able to pass or you are fired.

Perhaps in terms of overall policing, the lowered standards may play a part, but I have to wonder...of those officers who are guilty of shooting civilians for no readily apparent reason, how many of those cops are female, overweight, or 5'6" and scrawny, etc.? I seem to recall that the officer in question in one recent incident, where the "suspect" was walking away, was a woman, but that isn't typical.

Well, if you start with the understanding that America doesn't even technically need organized police forces (we had none of them between 1776 and 1838), then the "problem" of staffing such forces becomes moot.

That isn't to say we should get rid of them all, but a sizable reduction in their ranks would not be unwarranted, nor would it presage a dissolution of social order.

The constitution is pretty explicit in saying the "security of a free state" is the responsibility of the people (in the form of a militia), not the government.
