Captain Obvious (11-12-2012)
Afk burning my eyes out.
@the OP:
I too am very glad you're safe!
As to the nature of what happened to you, I more than relate, as some here already know. You'd be surprised at the number of men who are possessed of what we might delicately call romantic/sexual entitlement mentality. It's an unfair burden, but unfortunately a reality that women should definitely know how to defend themselves because there is a remarkably good chance that one will encounter this type of situation. According to recent statistics, somewhere between 1 out of 4 and 1 out of 5 American women have been raped before. That's raped, not harassed. Harassment of the sort you describe is experienced by nearly every woman in America at some point in their lives. There is no such thing as a truly "safe" neighborhood. In fact, you're most likely to be attacked not by a stranger, as in your encounter, but by someone you know! One must be prepared. I'm glad to hear that, from your description, you seemed to be. Also glad to hear you reported the encounter. Most don't do so, but you always should! Otherwise this may not be the last time you run into said person.
Much as I like your politics overall Grumpy (it's true!), this isn't a joke. This is real harassment that very easily could have wound up an assault case we're talking about. This is no place for jokes. They come off as trivializing the subject at hand.GrumpyDog wrote:
Did the man resemble Todd Akin? Was he dressed like a Southern baptist preacher by chance?

It would be interesting to see self defense taught in schools as part of physical education.
