Hundreds give tearful farewell to heroic war dog

Hundreds give tearful farewell to heroic war dog

Well at least he got a good farewell.

Hundreds turned out to say goodbye to the hero dog whose Marine veteran partner put together a bucket list for him after he was diagnosed with bone cancer. Cena, a black lab who served three tours in Afghanistan as a bomb-sniffer with the Marines, lived his final years with Lance Cpl. Jeff DeYoung, as his service dog.

DeYoung and Cena were first paired in 2009 after a personality test, and later deployed to Afghanistan together. In 2014, the pair reunited when DeYoung adopted Cena as his service dog for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He said having Cena around made it easier for him to be in public.

    Plus two...

Nothing gets to me like an old dog.

My big guy is just over ten and it's going to break me when he goes.

My little guy was 12 in may, hes laying with his head on my foot right now. Everywhere I go in the house hes with me. I am going to be destroyed when the time comes.

Ive always had dogs mostly shepherds but Im so close to this little guy because ive spend his whole life closer to him because I had alot more time.

I've had three other dogs in my life and they were great, but this dog, as much as he's a dick, is different. He's my shadow and a tripping hazard.

I can see that he's getting older now. He's got that look in his eyes, he sleeps more and he's getting grey. He's also a big dog (100 lbs) so I know I don't have a ton of time left with him.

I honestly don't know if I'll have another dog after him.

Oh, Lord, here it is not even daylight yet and I can't see. I don't think it's the dark.

I love dogs far, far more than people. Mine is 14. We've gone through a lot together, starting from when I found her 13 years ago after she had been hit by a car and left to die. Then 6 years ago, a wildfire, which destroyed everything I owned but her, my car, and the clothes I was wearing. We're growing old together, she gracefully, me, not so much, lol.

As you get older, the time seems to pass by so quickly; a decade or so, the entire lifespan of a dog, can go by before you know it. So it's incredibly hard to face becoming attached to someone that you know you'll have to say goodbye to forever, at a time just down the road. But...I believe you have to think past how painful it's one day going to be to say goodbye and focus on the years you'll have to enjoy one another's company. People often say that they can't bring themselves to go down to the shelter because they'll "just want to bring them all home", and I understand that, of course - but when the time comes that there's a dog-shaped hole in your life, you have to realize that somewhere, sitting in a lonely cage not far away, is somebody who will gladly love you unconditionally and be your buddy for as long as he or she lives. There is no doubt that the dog who has passed on and can't be your companion any longer would absolutely want that for you.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.” - Robert E. Howard

Truth be told, my heart was broken after every one of my dogs passed on, but ive always loved the next one just as much. There is however the one very special one that stands out.
