Not such a crazy punishment , imo , provided the person has been found guilty of theft after full and due process .
I would consider -- to be decided - an agreed level /amount / gravity of offence for a one time public warning , then a scale of punishments , perhaps starting with one or two fingers .

He was accused and they cut it off the next day. A trial and maybe jail time but not this. No I don't think a persons hand should be cut off for stealing. Many people here in America would be hand less. Do you also think if a 8 year old stole a piece of candy they should chop their hand off too?

AU gonna start fightin' its own battles?...

3,200 African troops needed to fight Mali rebels
Oct 24,`12 -- The African Union on Wednesday pledged to mobilize an African military force to battle al-Qaida-affiliated groups controlling northern Mali.
African foreign ministers meeting at the African Union headquarters in Ethiopia agreed to write a final operational plan for the African-led force by the end of the month, as well as calling for arms and equipment to be provided for Mali's army from members and international partners. Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, the president of the Economic Community of West African States, told The Associated Press after Wednesday's closed-door meeting that roughly 3,200 troops would be needed.

Western officials have said the planned African-led military offensive is unlikely to begin before next year - despite growing concern about the terrorist threat militants there pose to the continent and the rest of the world. The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution earlier this month giving Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon 45 days to help Mali develop a plan to recover the occupied territory. The United States, France and Britain have said they will offer logistical support, but the invasion needs to be led by African troops.

Mali was once considered one of the only stable democracies in West Africa, but it has since plunged into chaos. Islamist groups, including al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, are the de facto rulers of the north. Ramtane Lamamra, the head of the African Union's Peace and Security Council, said the AU is willing to hold talks with armed groups in Mali if they unequivocally denounce links with terrorists and are willing to forgo their separatist agenda.

Separately, the AU council gave Sudan and South Sudan to reach an agreement on the contested region of Abyei and two weeks on the disputed border areas. South Sudan peacefully broke away from Sudan last year.

Northern Mali is geographically separated from southern Mali- due to terrain. Good luck with an attack from the south by a local military force.

I am not approving of what they did but according to the quote he was a convicted thief and not a suspected thief. I live in Mexico and convicted pedophiles go to prison for a long, long, time. Everyone knows that so when one gets caught they have nothing to whine about.

An American pedophile was in prison and released a statement about how horrible his life was. I was asked to donate $100 to help him. I didn't. Perhaps he should have stayed in the U.S. where he could have Woody Allen and Whoopi Goldberg defending him.

Chalk one up for the insane Muzzies.
I hate me a thief nearly as much as a liar. Which reminds me, these guys do sanctioned tongue removals as well don't they?
Of course I'm kidding...kind of. But who wants to place a bet on this guy's potential for recidivism?
The fundamental difference between conservatives and liberals is simple.
Conservatives, like our founders, understand that man has a propensity to do evil. They accept this fact of human nature and have given us the tools to protect ourselves from those who might victimize us.
Liberals believe that under the right mandates, restrictions and incentives all that potential evil can be bred out of humanity.

In most of the Muslim world, amputation is for a convicted three time loser.. and the conviction is for grand larceny... its not about stealing candy.

I don't know what is going on in Mali.. and neither do you.
