    To simplistic way of thinking.

    Stephens was the VP of the confederacy, made a speech prior to the war.
    People that didn't agree with Stephens did not support the Confederacy, thus fought against the Confederacy.
    People that agreed with Stephens fought for the Confederacy.

    Trump was elected President of the US.
    Many did not agree with his election, thus you see public disagreement to him.
    Several agree with him, thus you see public agreement to him.
    If there was another civil war, you would see the ones that didn't agree with him fight against his policies, even though he was the president of the entire US.

    I understand why the attempt to try to make it seem like Stephen's words were not accepted by the entire Confederacy, because the words are so devastating and eye-opening, it would make sense for those that sympathize with the Confederacy to try and deflect from it.
