Several thoughts come to mind, e.g.:

(1) To tear down the statue seems like a symbolic attempt to eradicate southern history; and many of us are thoroughly opposed to that.

(2) It is my understanding that the counter-protestors--i.e. the "progressives"--were troublemakers bused in from Washington, DC.

(3) That said, the original protestors were apparently infused with members of the KKK and American Nazis--which are hardly representative of those of us who adhere to mainline conservatism.

All in all, it is a clash that some of us wish that both sides could (somehow) lose...

If I meant let small minorities inside a state decide how the teh people of Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama etc. wish to understand their past I would have used different terms.

It's embarrassing that Trump had to put a caveat on his condemnation. It's also embarrassing that there aren't stronger condemnations here of these white supremacists and this assault and murder.

When the the far left protests, some here condemn all the left. I certainly won't lump all the right in with these white supremacists, but it would be nice to hear more condemnation.

I am sickened by what happened today in Charlosttesville. Watching the different news outlets, I noticed that the white protesters were referred to as "white nationalists," "neo-Nazi's," and so on. The other side were called "counter-protesters." Hmmmm, BLM should have been called "black nationalists," or "black supremacists," right? The media did a fine job perpetuating the racial divide, and ramping up the violence by their mere presence.

I noticed some of the protesters were veterans, you know, people that fought for our country and our right to protest? Nationalists? Really?

Trump condemned the violence, unlike Obama who invited members of BLM to the WH.

Terms have meaning, a person doesn’t get to assign labels just because they don’t like the labels one side has.

There can be a whole separate discussion why BLM consists of a lot of different chapters and such, like the Tea Party, which I know several would not like the party to be judged by a few.
