Pop-up safe-injection site opens in Toronto w/o city approval

Toronto harm reduction workers are taking matters into their own hands by opening the city's first unregulated pop-up safe-injection site following a spate of deaths in and around the city — three in the last 24 hours.

The Toronto Harm Reduction Alliance is set to open the site Saturday at a "traditionally underserved" location in downtown Toronto, front-line harm reduction worker Matt Johnson told CBC News.

Johnson declined to give the site's exact location, citing the protection of users and organizers who could potentially be arrested, given that the space is not authorized by the city.

I support the move and I hope they are not arrested. It would be ideal if Toronto would give approval. Safe injection sites don't encourage drug use, but help to protect drug users. If we want to get super practical and cynical, it also helps society if society doesn't end up footing the bill for hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, and so on.

Well, it doesn't address the problem of addiction, but so many addicts share needles and, thereby, disease, and it does address that.

You can't force people to get help. At least they will have clean needles, and the local health authorities have been handing out Narcn. Not much else to be done, really.

All that does is encourage what they think is safe addiction, it does nothing to stop addiction

It doesn't encourage using drugs or continuing to use drugs. It simply allows addicts to have safe, clean needles rather than re-using and sharing needles.

In my two years of use, it took my friends nephew and his son, within days of each other, it was not long after, I quit for good, a little over 3 years ago. Good riddance.

My impression is addicts don't need encouragement, nor does discouragement help much. They're addicted, don't like it, and have to hit bottom and reach out. Clean needles means they'll live longer and hopefully survive.

Why would anyone support enabling drug addictions?

It certainly doesn't discourage heroin use. What's next? Government providing heroin addicts with safe heroin?
