Tell that to the owners, coaching staff and players looking for a spot on the rooster. Preseason is do or die for many who seek careers in the NFL. That all comes together to deny your idea that the games played ahead of the regular season are "irrelevant". So, does the game "matter"? Hell yes!!

Most if not all of the Superbowl winning years for the Steelers came with losing records in the preseason.
If a team is trying to win a preseason game they're foolish. The objective is 1) Stay healthy - no injuries and 2) Give the Joe Lopinyatz's of the team the opportunity to make the roster.
That's it.

pre-season games don't mean much. Established starters play one series or don't even play at all. Coaches don't develop game plans. Coaches are looking at specific players who might be able to provide quality depth or an upgrade at one specific position.
But then again, in spite of their recent spotty success, the Cardinals were such pathetic losers for so long, any time they win, it's looked at as a great thing.
