I don't believe that's accurate.

The second article was more clear on that.

They had bought 5000 of the M27s to replace the SAW then thought better of it. Now it is replacing the M4.

That makes more sense seeing that the 249 is a magazine or belt fed machine gun, but I didn't see anything wrong with the M-4.

I was a SAW gunner for a while when I was enlisted. I liked it a lot.
