USS Indianapolis wreckage found in the north Pacific

Civilian researchers on Saturday announced that they have found the wreckage of the USS Indianapolis, a World War II Navy cruiser that was sunk by a Japanese submarine on July 30, 1945.

The Indianapolis was found by a research team led by entrepreneur Paul G. Allen at a depth of more than 18,000 feet in the north Pacific Ocean, according to a Navy press release. About 800 of the ship’s 1,196 sailors and Marines survived the sinking in 1945, but only just over 300 survived the four- to five-day wait for rescue.




“To be able to honor the brave men of the U.S.S. Indianapolis and their families through the discovery of a ship that played such a significant role in ending World War II is truly humbling,” Allen said in the release.
