If the US leaves Afghanistan the Taliban will take over. Not because they're liked but because the Afghans won't fight them. We all saw how hated they were when they were driven out in 2001 and how many were Arabs and Pakistanis not Afghans. But it still remains that the Afghan army would just run.

After that ISIS and the Taliban who currently are enemies but without actually fighting each other would bury the hatchet and ISIS would open training camps in Afghanistan like Al Quiada used to have. They'd just relocate there from Syria.

Maybe Americans are willing to live with that rather than have to have an army there. It would be interesting to see opinion polls on it.

Whether the US stays, increases their troop numbers, or leaves, the Taliban will eventually come back/stay. They may just take temporary asylum in the hills of Pakistan - and the US won't go after Pakistan.

Congress gave approval for military action in Afghanistan long ago. As Commander in Chief, it is up to the President to execute that action.

While I would like to see us just get out of there, if we are going to be there, Trump is taking the route his predecessors failed to take. He is giving the commanders on the ground the authority to run the war. He has stated he does not intend to tie their hands and micromanage the campaign from the White House.

Determining strategy demands civilian management and direction. Wars implement policy. I contend that a President, his Secretary of Defense and the national security council should be deeply involved in developing and implementing the strategy. The civilian leadership should also be deeply involved in developing the war campaigns. Civilian leaders should be involved, but not so deeply in battles and tactics.

It is hard to get the mix right. We are defeating ISIS on the battlefields in Iraq and Syria. In Afghanistan, it will be up to the Afghanis to fight with our support. We excel at intelligence, communications, and fire support.
