Why do Navy warships keep running into things?

Why do Navy warships keep running into things?

Apparently the bridge crews these days are too focused on their electronics and nobody is actually looking outside.

James Goldrick has identified possible systemic problems in the US Navy that help explain recent accidents involving US warships. These problems may not be unique to the US Seventh Fleet and there has to be sympathy for Vice Admiral Aucoin, the Commander of the Seventh Fleet, who was made the scapegoat for recent accidents and sacked ‘due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command'. This was just a short time before he was due to retire.

James pointed to a possible need for the US Navy to reconsider its 'unrestricted line officer' concept, whereby its surface warfare officers are expected to gain experience as platform and combat system engineers at the expense of seamanship and navigation. He also addressed the very real issue that the younger generation of officers and sailors are being ‘captured’ by their electronic displays at the expense of actually looking out the window. Modern technology is no substitute for alert eyes and the experience to handle a potentially dangerous situation.

I was gonna say "too much grog" but your explanation makes much more sense.

Have been wondering that. The OP explains a lot.

I read somewhere that some of the problem has to do with the stealthy design of modern ships being harder to spot by other ships.

Oh I'm sure they don't, I was just cracking wise and agreeing/thanking your post at the same time. 2 birds, 1 stone, and all that stuff.

It seems that the merchant vessel that hit the Fitzgerald saw it- and flashed light in an attempt to get someone on the bridge to pay attention.

Well technically things keep running into our ships since it always seem to be midship impacts. Feels almost like the Navy just expects everyone to get out of their way.

All of this still spells one thing; military command incompetence. When ten sailors needlessly die because of it, it goes far beyond the logical but of so convenient excuse of merely a fixation on technology. With the Navy still grappling with with the Marine fallout ( 'It's Marine Corps wide': Female Marines discuss harassment amidst nude photos scandal ) it shows a wanton disregard by Navy brass for the basic human needs.
