His comedy is largely unknown to younger folks now, but he was, in the '50s and '60s, the smartest, coolest, funniest standup comic in the world. His first album, 'Inside Shelley Berman', was the first comedy record to go gold, and won the first Grammy for a non-music album. I grew up listening to my parents' copies of his records, along with Jonathan Winters and Brother Dave Gardner. One of the greats.

I had to look up some of his routines. I recognized some, such as the "department store" bit. He had some great material. I wish there was more modern comedy like that.

Brother Dave Gardner... haven't thought about him in a good while. It is amazing how timely a lot of his material is today.

Me too hal, everything has to be so crude today to be considered funny.

Jonathan Winters was funny as hell, he played a nut and he actually had been under psychiatric care a couple of times. I thought he was hilarious he passed away in 2013
