Kurds in Iraq vote in historic independence referendum

We shall see if anything comes of it.

Kurds packed polling stations across northern Iraq on Monday in a historic referendum on independence despite vigorous opposition from the country’s central government as well as regional and world powers.

Church bells tolled and imams implored Kurds over mosque loudspeakers to vote when polls opened across the Kurdish region — a swath of mountains, oil fields and desert that has been run as a semiautonomous enclave for decades.

The poll is expected to produce an overwhelming yes result that many Kurds see as the culmination of a century-long and bloody struggle for self-determination. Kurdish authorities said that 3.9 million people were eligible to vote and that final results are expected by Thursday.

The vote is set for September 25. It will be interesting to see the fall out.

The US is against the vote.
So why is Manafort working for them?

Kurdish bid for independence from Iraq emerges as regional flash point

    Most votes are for yes.

Regional powers and Iraq’s central government threatened crippling economic sanctions and military action against Iraq’s Kurdish region on Tuesday, a day after Kurds staged a landmark vote for independence that is emerging as another crisis in a region roiled by civil wars and the fight against the Islamic State.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Kurdish leaders had committed “a strategic and historic mistake” by holding the referendum and gave them until Friday to hand over control of airports and borders in northern Iraq to the federal government. If the order is ignored, international flights to the Kurdish region will be suspended, Abadi said.

Abadi also said that any oil revenue from the Kurdistan region — a critical economic lifeline for the semiautonomous enclave — must be returned to Baghdad, though he did not set a deadline for the demands.

“We will not compromise on Iraq’s unity or sovereignty,” he said. “We have taken measures to impose federal authority according to the Iraqi constitution.”

Too bad Saddam isn't there still, would snuff this Kurd Independence movement out as he had before. In fact, Kurdish refugees fleeing Saddam into Iran and Turkey raised issues there as well. But you supported Saddam crushing these independent movements that tend to increase chaos, a strongman to torture and rule by fear what they need there. Right?

There isn't a nation in the ME much less bordering Kurd territory that wants an autonomous Kurdish State. Those supporting it would immediately take issue with governments in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Russia, and Turkey. you armchair Generals are supposed to have so much f'n knowledge, the winging it group think here needs ironing out.

Ransom is a terrorist on an ironing board when he's got your arguments to flatten. Who the fck do you think will tolerate or has ever tolerated a Kurdish state much less autonomous governance.

    F'n rocket scientists!
