Trump may scare off Amazon's 50,000 new jobs to Canada

To fill the 50,000 jobs at an eventual 8.1-million square foot headquarters, Amazon needs a city that can provide home-grown talent, as well as appeal to a class of global programming mavens who can choose where to live.

For technology companies preoccupied with luring the best and brightest from around the world, the Trump administration's America First economic strategy is more than a little troubling. At the core of the worries is a White House crackdown on the H-1B visa program — the doorway into the U.S. for thousands of software engineers and other highly skilled foreign workers.

Called the "genius visa" and America's secret economic weapon, H-1B is credited with supplying the programming horsepower that built Silicon Valley into what it is today. At Facebook, for instance, foreign guest workers make up 15 per cent of the staff.

Antipathy towards that visa from the Trump administration, combined with its attempted Muslim ban and a potential Mexico border wall, is unsettling not only for the tech industry, but also for international workers who may now be second-guessing the wisdom of relocating to a country that's no longer as welcoming.

Enter Canada, which has no such baggage. Indeed, the equivalent visa program here is actually being fast-tracked in the hopes of poaching the exact workers who not long ago would have automatically landed in Silicon Valley.

Better corporate tax rate, better infrastructure, better process for permitting well-trained immigrants... due to Trump, Canada may get the 50,000 jobs from Amazon because the company is really not happy with some of Trump's decisions that hinder their ability to function. Not quite "business first," I guess.

Right. If Congress gets around to reducing corporate and individual tax rates what do you think will happen?

If the tech giants think they can get a better deal elsewhere I say let them.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

Amazon is a predatory employer, there have been many articles about how they underpay and over work their employees.

The most recent is that all employees work right up to the minute their day ends, then they line up to be physically searched by security before they can leave the building, if you are near the end of the line you could be there a hour. Amazon refuse to pay them for that hour, its in court now and amazon will lose.

When the employees were complaining, bezos told them Ill give you a 1,000.00 to resign because he knew that america was out of work and theres more employees than jobs. If a company were to go to canada, amazon would be one of the ones I chose.

You really don't think 50,000 jobs would benefit Americans?

I call BS about the border wall. Those people who are qualified to do the jobs like programming aren't about to cross our borders illegally. IF they are so damned qualified, they enter our country lawfully.
The ones crossing illegally are not qualified to program computers and set up complex networks

How Is Trump responsible for a corporate tax rate which was in place long prior to him becoming POTUS? He's actively calling for the congress to lower that rate to 15%.

The Amazon HQ is in Seattle. The far left wing led city is running Amazon out of Seattle. That's not Trump's fault.

Right now we have a handful of extremely partisan Democrats in the Senate who stop everything. Combine that with a weak and balless Republican majority. That's where the blame should fall.

Of course it would but if amazon leaves it will be for one reason money. If it saves them money to leave, they will. If it doesnt they will stay.

Trump has changed a certain type of Visa that allows in highly trained immigrants to work in high tech industries. That is the major obstacle.

    They're creating a second headquarters.

Does anyone actually read the articles posted or just pretend to know the issue?

Trump wants to lower the corporate tax rate, pass an infrastructure bill, and vet immigrants so the best and brightest get priority. Everything you've mentioned is being held up by bitter democrats. The thread title should be "Democrats may scare off Amazon's 50,000 new jobs to Canada".
