This operation captured my imagination more than any other when I was a kid. When I got a little older I was struck by how small it was, relatively speaking,

I am amazed at what the troops went through.

But I have seen combat and understand the mindset. The main focus is on your team.

The British First Airborne certainly had a rough time. Allied intelligence made a serious and arguably fatal oversight. Two SS divisions (the 9th and the 10th) were resting and refitting in the vicinity of Arnhem. Still, they made a dramatic stand at the bridge and in nearby Oosterbeek (sp?).

And the attack calls into question the usefulness of mass airborne attack. Even more so today with advanced air defense systems. My old job is likely history. At least for now. In the future there will be orbital assaults.

For all the criticism it receives it was an innovative scheme. The real problem with the plan was that it allowed so little room for error but even then it almost worked!

Yeah, you are probably right. Air drops will remain a method insertion for highly trained, special forces who can function on their own.

There will always be a need for a unit like the 82d. Special Forces cannot do critical installation seizure of anything other than a relatively small facility. They could never seize and secure a major airhead, railhead or port. Airborne forces will also remain important for use as blocking and interdiction forces.

The day of the Paratrooper is far from over.
