Sessions issues broad guidelines to protect religious objections to public policy

This is both religious and political. The guidelines protect expression of religious liberty from government policies. This, I think, preserves the intent of separation of church and state from Roger Williams's 1644 "when they have opened a gap in the hedge or wall of Separation between the Garden of the Church and the Wildernes of the world, God hathe ever broke down the wall it selfe, removed the Candlestick, &c. and made his Garden a Wildernesse."

AG Jeff Sessions issues broad guidelines to protect religious objections to public policy

The Justice Department issued new guidance across the government Friday aimed at giving religious groups and individuals broad protections to express their beliefs when they come into conflict with government regulations, including when making hiring decisions.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions' directive fleshes out an executive order issued by President Trump earlier this year that had targeted in particular a provision of tax law prohibiting churches from direct involvement in political campaigns, a point that has chafed some evangelical activists.

But Sessions’ action, long anticipated since Trump’s announcement in May, also staked out religious protections for hiring decisions that could threaten those whose sexual orientation conflicts with employers' faith.

"Except in the narrowest of circumstances, no one should be forced to choose between living out his or her faith and complying with the law," the attorney general wrote. "To the greatest extent practicable and permitted by law, religious observance and practice should be reasonably accommodated in all government action, including employment, contracting and programming."

Im not a religious guy, or I should say overly religious but religious people of only 1 faith, Christians have been under assault for a long long time, certainly all through the obama admin. Muslims of course were just fine

Truth be told the left led a full frontal assault on christianity for reasons we all know

Left Loses its Mind Over Jeff Sessions Memo That Brazenly Restates Existing Law

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is angrily condemning a memo released today by Attorney General Jeff Sessions that it describes as "an all-out assault on LGBTQ people" creating "a sweeping 'license to discriminate'" in furtherance of President Donald Trump's "cynical and hateful agenda." The memo does this via provocative language such as "freedom of religion is a fundamental right of paramount importance" and "government may not interfere with the autonomy of a religious organization" by, for example, forcing an Orthodox yeshiva to accept female rabbinical students.

Don't get me wrong—we're not exactly fans of Sessions here at Reason. But today's memo shouldn't make your list of reasons to dislike the man, who is much more fittingly criticized for being a lover of asset forfeiture and a drug warrior extraordinaire.

Haters of the religious liberty memo seem to believe (or, perhaps more accurately, want you to believe) that it establishes a new right for businesses and government agencies to turn people away on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. They should be comforted, then, by the revelation that virtually everything in the document is merely a restating of existing law and Supreme Court precedent.
