San Diego’s hepatitis A outbreak is among nation’s worst in decades

17 dead this is damn serious

Experts say San Diego took all the right steps in addressing what is now one of the largest hepatitis A outbreaks the country has had in decades, but variables unique to the city’s situation contributed to the outbreak.

At least 481 people have been infected and 17 have died of the infection since November in San Diego. Eight-eight other cases have been identified in Santa Cruz and Los Angeles counties, where hepatitis A outbreaks have been declared.

Officials throughout the state are now rushing to vaccinate homeless populations, which are considered the most at risk. Doctors say people who have already been infected could travel and unknowingly spread it elsewhere.

Dr. Janet Haas, president-elect of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, said the outbreak is unusual for the U.S. because the spread of the liver infection has been blamed on a lack of basic hygiene and sanitation, not contaminated food.

That means public health officials can’t solely rely on previous containment methods.

Could, perhaps, the overwhelming illegal population have anything to do with it?

It's California, land of the sanctuary cities, welcoming illegals from all over, mostly third world countries......could THAT, have anything, at all, to do with it?

We may need to build a wall around California.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

That's inexcusable. There has been a vaccine for A and B for a very long time. I got mine years ago.

Might be costly, but, if we all pitched in.... I'm for, chipping it off, setting it adrift and, creating a floating asylum.

We could use some beach-side property here in Arizona.

    Hepatitis A outbreak in California...

California gov. declares emergency in hepatitis A outbreak
Oct. 13, 2017 -- California Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday declared a state of emergency to control a hepatitis A outbreak.
Last month, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency declared local outbreaks in September. The Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency began issuing health alerts about the virus in May.

A news release from Brown's office said the emergency proclamation authorizes the state's department of public health to purchase more hepatitis A vaccines and "distribute them to impacted communities."

California Gov. Jerry Brown said his proclamation authorizes the county health department to purchase more hepatitis A vaccines and distribute them to affected communities.

Santa Cruz County has had at least 73 cases of the virus since April, San Diego County has had 490 cases and 18 deaths, and Los Angeles County has had 10 cases, eight of which were linked to outbreaks in the other two counties.

Hepatitis A is usually spread by mouth through contact with objects, food or drinks contaminated by the feces of an infected person. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says symptoms of the virus include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored bowel movements, joint pain and jaundice.
