    Yes occupying a nation with a different culture that doesn't share your values is futile unless you go Mongol on them. I agree with you about the inefficiencies in the military.

    The government is slowly taking over the economy from a huge military and it's vendors and Defense contractors to drug laws creating our prison state to regualtion over so many industries requiring government agencies simply to check on regulation compliance. You are right about the jobs but we must be willing to readjust our economy back to a a non government economy. Otherwise they will slowly seek more and more control as that is what unchecked governments do. Look at the power they've extended over healthcare and education in recent decades as well. They will eventually own , over regulate or indirectly control most of the economy if we just sit by.
