Dying chimpanzee recognises old human friend before smiling and embracing him

Dying chimpanzee recognises old human friend before smiling and embracing him

A good read about an old chimpanzee and what an old friend does to help her pass.

Footage has emerged of the moment a dying chimpanzee appears delighted to see an old human friend one last time.

Mama, a former matriarch of a colony of chimps at Royal Burgers Zoo in Holland, was refusing food from keepers until being visited by professor Jan van Hooff, whom she had known since 1972.

The 59-year-old ape, who had been unresponsive and curled up in a ball, reacted with joy after recognising the professor. Appearing to smile, she touched his face, held the back of his neck and brought his head down to hers.
I read in another article on this that they brought each of the chimps from her home zoo two by two to say goodbye to her.

At first I thought it was heart-wrenching. But really it inspires us. This is the end result of life, and what happened here shows the best of our nature. This chimp lived a long life and was able to appreciate her last days with the effort others showed to honor her life.

It also showed animals arent much different than us with their emotions and feelings. A human lieing in a hospital waiting the end of life would react the same way to a face they knew

My mom was too far gone by the time I got to her. I am not even sure that she knew I was there before the end.

I did get to my father's side in time. Unfortunately his wife put the decision to pull the plug in my hands.

I was there when my mom died, holding her hand. My dad went too quick. I got the call from a relative saying it was soon and ten minutes later when I was rushing out the door, I got a second call saying it was over.

Being there for my mom all the way through the end is the one thing I am secretly most proud of. Death is inevitable. Being there for someone dying is often a choice.
