    Poor And Criminality

I keep reading that poor folks get treated unfairly in the justice system because they are poor.

What does being poor have to do with whether or not a person commits felonies? Maybe being stupid does, but not being poor.

Maybe drug use should be legal. But it's not. Everyone everywhere knows it is illegal to sell or do drugs. So just follow the law.

It really is very simple to stay out of prison.

If you don't respect the law you go to prison, as a white 17 yo I found that out when I got sent to prison for 4 years. I now respect the law and made up my mind that prison is not a place I want to be, lo and behold, not a lick of trouble since 2005.

You miss the point I believe. The poor don't have the resources to acquire the quality of legal expertise that the more affluent might. I agree being poor is no reason to become a criminal.
Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I digress....

Public defenders are all about that plea bargain, true. But one does not end up being introduced to one by accident.

I would add that the poor also can not have ready access to the things that one can use to lessen a sentence--like pre-admitted to in-patient rehab, have some connection that will get them a job on the spot, etc. They also may not have access to experts who can be called into court (or that they can afford to pay to come to court) to testify they had some mental health issue undiagnosed at the time of the offense that is now being treated, etc.
