    The train

How is the railway service in your town, and how often do you use the train to commute daily?

Whenever I see US films and TV series, I never see anyone catching the bus or train - why is this?
Oh, I wish I were a glow worm,

Europe has the best infrastructure in terms of public transit and connectivity, and the United States (and Canada) are not investing in the same type of systems, like fast rail. Large cities might have metro or subway systems which are useful, but a lot of places don't. Bus? Usually not well maintained (so gross) and not very efficient unless you manage to live on a direct shot from point A to point B.

For example, where I lived in Canada, it would have taken 3 buses to get where I was working which would have taken 90 minutes. I did not have time for 180 minutes of transit time when I could catch a cab that would take 20 minutes. Costs more, but necessary for a realistic travel time. The city is now putting in a fast train service but it only connects the three major cities and is completely useless for people who live in the suburbs (like 80% of people) because you have to take one to two buses to get to the line. $850 million poorly spent - no one is going to use it, except university students going downtown since that happens to be one route (but it is also a direct bus route... so...).

People are pretty reliant on cars at this point. Updating transit systems costs a lot of money, which a lot of cities don't have.

There the AmTrack Sunset Station downtown San Antonio...

Not sure it stops here anymore.

    There's the Brackenridge Zoo Train...

Union Pacific has a freight line running right through the city...

I've only ridden the zoo train.

This is the Midwest, trains carry wheat, oil, cattle, that kinda stuff. Not people.

Bus service here is a joke, if you don't have a car you are screwed. Our city has about half a million people but it's 26 miles wide.

The South bound train stops at 11PM and northbound one stops at 4 a.m, give or take 6 hours depending on what broke down or hit something and where. Bus service is horrible both in terms of time and comfort unless you enjoy dislocated backs.

When I lived in DC I took the Metro twice a day five days a week and sometimes on weekends, but you still need a car to connect to the line. When I lived in NYC, subway was my only option really as cabs are not worth it and a lot of them won't take you if you want to go any distance. They want to churn through as many passengers in a limited area as possible so you end up needing to use a car service or the subway for longer trips.

When you watch TV, you are watching TV, try not to depend on it for your world view.

Nonexistent. We have good trolleys within Dayton, but they aren't connected to other towns and cities in our region in any way. We had a thriving amtrak station until a few years ago. We had a thriving greyhound hub, too.

We got rid of those things because the surrounding towns didn't want african Americans without cars to have access to their communities.

Ohio had a big time network of trains called the inner urban system until late in the 50s. It was removed for the same reason.
